Default Engine not started in 3 years

I just inherited a Dodge Ram 2500 truck with a Cummins 5.9L 24 Valve engine. The engine has not been started in 3 years. Beyond an oil change and fresh fuel does anyone have any suggestions on starting this engine up after such a long time?

I'm new to diesel engines, so i will appreciate any guidance yall may have to offer

As a former Cummins owner I'll chime in. First, How much fuel is in it? Personally, I would drain the fuel and add fresh diesel with a new fuel filter. In addition I would add some Diesel Kleen to the fresh fuel. Also once you get it running I would have someone qualified to check the diesel fuel lift pump to make sure it is healthy. The lift pump draws fuel from the tank and supplies the high pressure injection pump. If the lift pump is weak it can starve the very expensive injector pump of fuel and wipe it out. There are some good websites for Dodge diesel trucks that have a ton of info. PM me if you want the names.

As for the oil, both Shell RotellaT 15w40 and Chevron Delo 15w40 are good quality diesel oils. I switched over to synthetic and ran Mobile Delavac1 5w40 which is an excellant synthetic diesel oil. For filters I advise you run Fleetguard filters. Fleetguard is a subsidiary of Cummins and it's basically Cummins Filter division. The Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter is a high quality filter.

In addition a new serpentine belt, air filter, as well as flushings your transmission, transfer case (if it's 4wd), and differentials would be money well spent. Also, if any front end componets have grease fittings grease them.

Good luck and happy Cummins
