Default Oil change already??

Hey guys... So my oil change message came up already.. I have 5800kms on my truck and I've had it since the end of November.. Reading the maintenance book it says that the oil is changed every 13000kms or every 6 months.. Is it just the dealership setting it up so that I have to come in early and spend more money? Or do I really need to get it changed?

Oil change intervals usually are tied to service duty. If the oil change message came up sooner than recommended it is saying that the interval has been met based on how you use the truck.

Frankly, 13000 kms seems like a lot unless it's synthetic oil.

The dealer has no way of setting this so they aren't out to get ya.

I just talked with my Dodge/Ram service tech (member here "Diesel Geek") and he said that it is best to go 5,000(m)-6,000 on the first oil change. He also said that it is a myth to change your oil at the 1,000(m) like many might claim. The engine the actually NEEDS the first bit of carbon build up to seat the piston rings and other internal components properly.

i run full synthetic in mine and the upgraded filter, and i still go in every 5000k. oild comes out as clean as it went in which is great! remember oil is the blood of your engine...it worth the extra money to take care of it!

I change my oil and filter in all my vehicles every 5000 Km.
Oil not only lubricates your engine, but also provides some cooling.
As the oil breaks down with heat, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I do all my own work, so it the cost is just the oil and the filter.

I've had that oil analyzer light go off anywhere fron 2500 mile to 6000 mile, I drive alot and pull a 30' trailer with it couple times a year, also I'm pretty heavy on the gas with it too. My rule is I change at 5k and I've used syn oil after the first 500 mile I put on it. The book say to change it with in 500 miles if that light goes off.

I changed mine at 2,000 miles and the light just went off at 2,552 miles. Had to reset the evic and everything is fine. I basically change my oil once a season as I hardly get 2,000 miles in one driving season (Winter months) as I only drive the truck in the winter.

Full synthetic with mine, oil and filter replaced at 5,000 miles. I reset the computer myself.

I know that the "oil change indicator" is supposed to be duty based, but I have my doubts on that. On my '08 it would go off every 2500 miles exactly. My '10 seems to be set up the same way... that doesn't sound duty based to me....

I had several yrs of free oil changes from the dealer when I bought my '08, so I didn't really care, I'd take it in, let 'em change it. My '10 I chose not to go that route, and I do all of my own oil changes, etc.... I changed it the first time at around 3000 miles, then again at 5000 (I know it didn't really needed it at 5K, but I like to have a nice round easy to remember mileage number so I know when I'm due, as I change every 5K). I know when the last change was on my truck, so I tend to reset to the notice, and continue on my way. I do check my oil every time I fill up, so I'm aware of how dark, level, etc of my oil.

just the way I do things

My Sport lights up religiously at 4500km. The oil is always lightly tainted, but I change it anyways.
