Question Buying Advice: New RAM 1500 Crew

Hey all, I'm in the market for a new Dodge RAM 1500 Crew and was hoping for some of your advice on what to expect in terms of actual sale prices and dealer negotiation (this will be only my 2nd new vehicle).

I've been configuring my RAM online using the Dodge/RAM website, and come up with an MSRP of around $36,000 after $4500 in incentives. What I'm wondering is:

1. How much lower can I expect to be able to negotiate the price with a typical dealer (not counting national incentives - I just want to know how far to push the dealer on top of company incentives)?

2. Do I assume correctly that the national incentives listed online do not come out of the dealer's pocket, so a dealer shouldn't be using these to say "Look how much I've already come down from the MSRP."? I'm guessing it would make sense to first agree with the dealer on what the national incentives are, and then haggle from there re: how much the dealer will cut his margin on the sale, correct?

3. If I can't find the truck I want on a given dealer's lot, should I expect more/less/the same dealer discounts if I have the dealer trade it from another dealership that does, or what about if I factory order it?

4. Any advice on what time of year/what month typically brings the best Dodge/RAM sales and incentives?

Thank you all!

shop the end of the month...this is when the sales dept is going to be most agressive to meet their monthly quota of sales. They are a little more gung ho to get you what you want to make the sale.
As far as price set a price in your head of what you want to pay for your truck and what options you want. DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS.
my truck before taxes and interest and all the little added crap after...just the truck was 26,000. After all is said and done it was just over 30.
They told me it didn't have keyless entry, it doesn't have fogs or anything like that. I told them I wasn't buying it without keyless entry, they threw in the cammand start/keyless at no extra charge to me. I settled on not having fogs cause I want to add my own later on.
I knew what I wanted when I walked in, but realize the higher up models you go they do jump a fair bit in price. Set a price in your head and they are more than likely going to meet it. ESPECIALLY in january when sales are typically really low, they will fight a little harder to get you the best deal possible.

my suggestion would be to go online to your dealerships sites in your area, check to see what they have in inventory, that will give you an idea of the MSRP

Now go to http://www.edmunds.com/dodge/?ps=new
see what they are posting as far as prices
more IMPORTANTLY, at the top of that page, read the TIPS & ADVICE under there read the buying or leasing a car, especially about Internet Prices on the Showroom Floor

Now you have to decide whether to buy an older new stock 2010, or the new stock 2011

OR if you want to order from the factory, Special Order, the exact Ram that you want, through your dealerships INTERNET OFFICE, ( you already read about that at the Edmunds site), the new 2011.5 Ram that should be out in July, it will be the new 2012 model year Ram, HOPEFULLY with the new 8 speed transmission made by ZF, a German transmission that is going to be in a lot of the new Chrysler vehicles, starting with the 2012 model year

You have a lot to consider, take your time,
Happy Hunting & Good Luck

Just bought a 2010 and here were some things I took away:

1. Incentives are paid by Chrysler - they should not be counted as "discounts."
2. If you buy a truck from one dealer, but they have to transfer it from another, the other dealer is not under any obligation to give your dealer the "dealer hold back" which is just above $1,000.00 so that might impact your bargaining tool if you have to go "off lot." My advice would be to shop lots and then use comps to get best deal.
3. There are some great sites that give you true price paid by dealers - I think consumer reports and edmunds both do that for modest fee.
4. The very best time to buy in terms of incentives and if you plan on keeping truck for several years is at the end of the year - late December/very early January. I just bought my crew cab 4x4 Big Horn with extra features (luxury package, technology package, remote start/alarm, 20"x9" wheels, premium seats, etc...) that added up to an MSRP of $40,840. After discounts and incentives, I paid $30,100 total (that was before trade). It broke down to $6,250 for rebates and about $4500 in dealer discount off of price. Originally, we had worked out a deal for $29,600 but that was with 3.9% interest. The sales manager found me a rate of 2.69 for 72 months which in order to take, meant the loss of $500.00 of additional rebate. However, over the course of the loan, I will save a total of over $900.00 by taking the lower rate over the bigger rebate so I took that instead.

According to the finance manager who showed me the actual papers, they "took a loss" on my purchase of about $1200.00 below what they paid for the truck, but made up about $1100 on their dealer hold back. When I asked them how they were going to make any money on this deal (they lost $100.00 over what they paid), they said my purchase was going to add to their volume quota, which if they reached a certain sales goal, they would get another approximately $1,000 from Chrysler for my truck - so in the end they made money while I got a great deal.

I spent a great deal of time shopping first on the internet. I knew what every dealer in our area had in stock and what all incentives were before I ever arrived. I also had several quotes on comparable models from other dealers, including Ford and Chevy and was able to show them those quotes. I was patient and tenacious in the process and ended up with a great truck, which while missing some features I'd like - I have plenty of room to get them and still be ahead on price.

Dealers need to make money, so we can't expect them not to earn a profit on sales. They can't stay in business that way (unless they've got a booming used lot). So you have to ask yourself how much profit you are willing to give...

There may still be a few 2010's out there. If you are willing to search for them, you may be able to get an even better deal than mine. It would be worth the drive to find the right price for sure....

+1 bgerard,

I bought my 2010 1500 the 2nd of Jan. There were alot of incentives and discounts. MSRP was $35K and I ended upm paying $23.2K. Even though I really didn't need a new truck (had 97 Ram 1500), I couldn't beat the price. If I ever buy another new vehicle, I would wait until late Dec early Jan. Good luck, by the way a love my new RAM

we got our new 2011 quad cab outdoorsman last week. i was searching for the truck i wanted online and found 2 at a dealer about an hour away 1 green and 1 black. i emailed them on a fri and told them we were coming down on sun to look at the outdoorsmans. so we set up a time . when we got there on sun the sales manager i was emailing set us up with a salesman, he pointed out where the trucks were and went to get the keys. trudged through the cold and snow , no outdoorsmans. one sold the prevous week and the other sold that fri.they ended up finding us a green one that they got from another dealer, but it did'nt have the bedliner that all theirs come with and was included in their price. they agreed to put it in and gave us a very good trade in on the 05.so the deal was made. sticker 37,060 after dealer discounts and incentives 27,161, what made it even better was that the truck they got for us had the power trailer tow mirrors and power seat that their advertised one didn't
