you might have a vacuum leak somewhere on the throttle body or your idle air control valve (IAC) located on the throttle body might be bad.

For starters, the 5.2 doesn't have a timing belt, it has a chain, and if someone charged you to replace it, you got the shaft. Second, Dodge trucks (gas engines) don't have MAF sensors, they use speed density (MAP) to calculate the fuel curve. RedBulls suggestion is the one you need to pay heed to. Check the TB and hoses for vacuum leaks. You can do this by spraying these areas with carb or brake cleaner with the engine running and listening for a change in engine RPM.

Ramtech - like a Seafoam treatment? should clean it all out...the truck with smoke like unbelieveable but that stuff works great!

You really need something in a spray can so you can direct the cleaner toward a particular area. Sea Foam does a great job of cleaning intakes though.

i had a similiar issue with my 98, the truck would just rev up and down (maybe 300 rpms at most) couldnt figure it out, checked for vac leaks, found nothing

replaced a throttle position sensor.?? i think, (this was a couple years ago) and problem solved, my truck would even die when the rpm's dipped that low

replaced my tps, and that fixed it.

another thing to look at is make sure your tranny is full on fluid, in neutral.
