Question Navigation Advice

When I bought my truck I did not get the navigation system because the cost was so much. I figured I could just get a aftermarket system for a fraction of the price. I am wondering if anyone can help me, I want to get one that goes in place of my radio, with all the features navigation, am/fm cd dvd player mp3 satellite radio and I also want to be able to control it with the steering wheel controls (if possible) and I want it to have that factory look to it. If anyone could give me some advice on where I could find one I would really appreciate it, Thank you.

www.crutchfield.com
They have a huge selection of audio and video stuff. If you have never dabbled in car audio I would suggest having it installed by a pro.

I have been looking at that site and found some good information. One thing i am wondering though is, if you buy the stuff on the internet can you take somewhere to get installed? Or do you have to buy the product from the store for them to install it? It sounds like a dumb question but I could see a store not wanting to do it or charging ALOT if you dont buy the product from them.

So I am doing alot of research on it, I cannot find a Adapter for the steering wheel controls even for a 2010. Every website i go to does not have the 2011 ram on there, is it the same as the 2010? Anyone know of a adapter that will work for a Kenwood DNX9960? I really want to be able to use the steering wheel controls.

the dash on the 2009 - 2011 should all be the same

with some radios larger then 1.5 DIN, i think a small portion of metal needs to be trimmed off

another site to look at is www.installer.com for radios, wiring, & connectors

you could consult a auto audio store & they may even be able to get the stuff cheaper.

The audio guy that i chose to use, always has Hot Rods & Classic vehicles in the process of having sound systems installed. if you know anything about hot rods & classics, those people are VERY picky about who works on their vehicles

Perhaps off topic, but hopefully you are not doing all this just to gain navi,,,,

I do realize an aftermarket navi radio will not have al the following faults, but perhaps the info will help others,,,N

My truck came with navi,,, So far, it's a pain in the azz to operate compared to any Garmin portable I've ever owned. Search for a Home Depot without first entering a zip code, and you will get some really f'ed up results (i.e. I'm in Houston, and navi tells me the closest one is over 800 miles away!!!! No need to enter a zip code on the Garmin)

Plus, in OEM form, it locks whenever the vehicle is moving so you have to pull over and stop to enter an address.

Navteq does the maps, (same as Garmin) and updating an OEM headunit is $200, where as updating a Garmin portable is around $70.

And, finally,,,,,, we all know the navi is an expensive factory option. well, the thieves are fully aware of this as well and my truck was broken into with the intent of snatching my navi head unit. Window was broken, metal around window was bent, dash scratched up from the glass, and the dash 'bezel' around the HVAC / Radio was jacked up. Broad daylight in the office parking lot. They didn't get the head unit, but with $1000 deductible, it was not a 'pleasent' experience,,,,

If I have a choice, I'll never get OEM Navi in any vehicle again. Overpriced, underperforming, and just too many other caveats.

Thanks for the Info, I am not doing it just for the Navi i also plan to install a aftermarket backup camera at the same time i get the head unit put in, I already have the alpine speaker system so I want to get a nice Aftermarket head unit with as many extras as i can get. I think I have made up my mind on the Pioneer AVIC-X920BT with a Boyo back up camera. And i may have found the wiring kit needed to keep the steering wheel controls as well thanks to GTyankee and one of the sites he recommended.

Looks like you are on the right track here.

Check out PacAudio for the harness you need to maintain use of your steering wheel controls and for the amp interface. They work flawlessly!
