Default exhuast problems

hey new to the site today and in dec i had a true dual exhaust instaled. The guy left the cat off and said he put heavy duty mufflers on it. So i use to get 13 mpg and now i am getting 6... pretty sure it has to be the exhaust. went back to talk to him twice and he just keeps saying he only cares about sound. my engine light comes on after 10 or 15 min which i expected but the truck doesnt run as good when it comes on. I had a different guy hook a computer up to it and he said the o2 sensor says its running lean and he said to find out if there are suppost to be two o2 sensors because there is only one right now. I need to get this fixed soon cant really aford to keep driving it like this. i took the cat off my 91 camaro, hollowed it out and put it back on and she ran like a bat out of hell just wondering if the 360's arent ment to run without a cat. any input would be appreciated

More than likely your EGR is acting up as well. Which can adversely affect your MPG's. But, fixing your O2 sensor issue would probably clear that up... Since the PCM would have the info it needs to operate the EGR. I do believe your Ram has 2 separate cats. Each should have an O2 sensor before and after the cat, for a total of four. See the graphic on this link: http://www.2carpros.com/questions/do...nkshaft-sensor

I would visit your exhaust guy again and see if he still has the cats, they really shouldn't be removed on newer computer controlled vehicles such as your Ram.

Also, make sure you stop by the "newbie" section and introduce yourself. There is a wealth of knowledge on the 'forumz' and always someone willing to help.

i agree with most of gorillas post, except that your truck is old enough that removing that cats should be fine. i removed them on my old 99 and i had no issues with the pcm

Oh it can be done! But, anytime you take an O2 sensor out of the mix, you are asking for trouble. He should have either hollowed the cat out or at least reinstalled the O2's. Best of luck to you.

He put one O2 sensor back in the right side pipe. The picture in the link showed one before and after the cat on each side like one of you guys had mentioned, but with no cat do i need to put two on each side. thanks for the help so far.

Also, it was a single pipe to begin with. the pipe had broke right before the cat( which is where the two pipes Y) so he said sense we were eliminating the cat it would be the same price to run duals or for him to make a Y so i thought shoot run the duals! so I think it should have only had 2 O2 sensors right?

Looking at the o2 sensor arrangement on a '99 shows 4 sensors, one pre-cat per side, one post cat per side.
