Question 1996 Ram 1500 4x4 operation

I've just traded for a 1996 Ram 1500 4x4. The 4x4 shifter is in the floor, not electronic. When the shifter is put to 4LO or 4HI, what causes the front hubs to engage. I was told that they may be vacuum operated. True or not? It doesn't seem like the traction on the front is equal to that on the rear when in 4wd. Thanks, David.

There is a front axle disconnect located on the front axle that is vacuum operated but it doesn't have a traditional hub like the older 4WD's.

Speaking of this, I heard that when you get a lift and go to a bigger wheel/tire you end up wearing out the hubs frequently. Solid axle industries makes hubs and will these cure that problem?
