sorry man but BS. A friend and retired head of our countys police dept, installed HIDs on all of his cars, so i asked him the same question, and he said not at all as long as you re-aim them afterwards. The bluer to purple ones are though.

where are you all getting your hid kits from? i bought some fogs and headlights from HID extra for my last truck but had nothing but problems. I gave them another shot for this truck, put the fogs in and 2 weeks later one ballast was shot. So i am returning the headlights and getting a different company

Did he install projectors?
There not DOT approved once the hid's are dropped in.
I guess he knows that already?

There is no way to control the light output or direction when you drop a HID into a halogen headlight.

u can call bs if you wish, do some online searches and u will find out that im correct... just because a cop says somethings legal do not make it legal..... hids in NON projector headlights are not DOT approved for road use and are ILLEGAL, most cops dont give a sh!t because they have better things to do.

Its only illegal if you get caught.
The cops around me have them on their personal vehicles. I asked one if they were legal and he said that they won't pull anyone over for having them.

There are legal DOT/SAE housings out there that can be used.

That being said the only bad HID is a poorly aimed HID. So if you install them take the time to aim them accordingly.

you can aim them all you want, aiming do not make hid bulbs dot approved. i guess i can preach this until i turn blue in the face.... theres a reason why all oem hids are in projectors. the oem REFLECTOR housing we have are not approved for hid bulb use.... not that i give a shit, im TRYING to state a fact here, accept the truth... hids are illegal when they are not in a HID housing (projector) ..... and those "recon ebay projector" junk headlights, they are also not approved for hid.... no one makes a true HID projector headlight for the ram, thats why we have to RETROFIT hid projectors into our housings.... this is the correct way to install hids, its more expensive, but its done right....... what im getting at here, is if you want to blind the crap out of everyone, and make your truck look like a riced out civic, and get nailed by the cops when u get busted, go ahead and install hids in your stock housings...... IF you want awesome light output, and not blind everyone, retrofit a set of hid projectors....
