Sorry, I was mostly answering this part of your original post "can I even mount one directly to my frame? " with details about how the hitch receivers are designed to be mounted and not addressing the universal Reese hitch. With enough effort I'm sure you can make the universal hitch work but I'm not sure how much trouble it will be. The only way to know for sure is to get under the truck with it and see how things line up. You could get lucky and have bolt right into place. If it looks like too much work after mocking it up under the truck, sell the Reese hitch to an F150 owner and buy a receiver designed for the Ram.
