Default Fuel mileage on the 2011?

Hello,

I'm new to Rams and recently purchased an 11 Ram Sport 4x4. It's the Hemi engine. Anyhow, the truck has 700 miles on it now and has averaged 12.7 mpg, and that's with me babying it everywhere. The dealership reset the transmission shift point module thinking it may have been skewed by an aggressive test drive prior to me driving it, but it's made no difference whatsoever. I have never even gotten on the truck to pass anyone.
This is being driven in mostly stoplight-to-stoplight traffic (Colorado Springs).

Is this normal? 12.7 mpg on easy driving? Anything I can do to improve it (K&N, trade it in on a Corolla, etc).

Thanks in advance.

-Ryan

In the winter time not much you can do about mpg. The gas has an additive in it that kills mpg. Add to that the amount of time it takes the motor to warm up to full operating temp so the MDS will operate. Then there's the extra work it has to do in order to get through the messy streets.

My combined (mostly 35mph city and 65 hwy) warm weather is 16mpg and I'm good with that. I have a 4x4 truck so I don't expect much. On a trip in Sep I got 20+ at 65mph on level hwy.

How about stopping by the Newbie area and introducing yourself.

Well if your constantly stopping and going in town which is what it sounds like then yea that's about right. With me doing similar type driving I was averaging 11-12 mpgs, give or take. Plus the cold weather affects MPG's negatively.

Trade it in on a camry. The stop and go traffic is going to kill you on MPG's.

I see you have the 4X4, what gears do you have? 3.21, 3.55, 3.92?

A few things to say: 1) mpg and HEMI don't belong in the same sentence, 2) cold weather will hurt mpg, 3) using 4x4 auto or any 4wd will hurt mpg, 4) Ram trucks are big-- big hurts mpg, 5) city driving, light to light, will hurt mpg, 6) opening up that HEMI just to hear it roarrrrrrr will hurt mpg, 7) and did I say mpg and HEMI don't belong in the same sentence!!!

After saying all that, I get 13.5 city and 17 hw so far with 3600 miles driven.
I use 89 octane and use 4wd when necessary and only listen to that roarrrr to pass that tractor trailer on the interstate or some idiot road hog.

Thanks for the input guys. If that's what I'm going to average, no problem, I just wanted to make sure that it was a reasonable figure.

I have other vehicles to drive when it is nice out so I can spread it out a bit. I just travel into the mountains a lot and haul stuff - my last truck wasn't a full size and I needed the extra capacity and real back seat. Besides, a V6 just doesn't get up those passes like a Ram will.

It has the 3.92 gears I believe. The "good ones" according to the salesman.

I looked around the forum a bit, and may have missed it, but are there a few "can't miss" bolt-ons for these trucks? K&N, programmer, etc? Thanks for all the good info.

3.92s arent the best for fuel mileage. I avg 15mpg city and highway. usually if i reset the computer im around 18 highway and 14 city. Winter is rough tho i was all city for a month cause i was off school and i was only getting 11mpg. Cant expect much more out of a v8

Yea you will notice a gain once the truck is broken in and the winter gas is out of the picture. I have the same problem, mine is worse though haha. I am getting like 10MPG which is with me just driving and not really watching it.

Like it was said the Hemi and MPG dont really go well together. Although it is supposed to be better then the older Hemi versions.
