Default Oil change due too early, too often?

Hi members,
I own my 2010 Ram 1500 Laramie since last september, and it is my very first truck, so I really don't know much about maintenance.

Anyway, this model has an internal message system that is supposed to tell you the right time to change the oil and so on. My truck was new, and even though I knew the first oil change to be about at 3,000 miles, it came up earlier, at around 2,500. Never mind that. I did have the oil changed, no problem there.

THE PROBLEM is that now I have only about 5,000 miles on the thing, and today the message popped up again. Now I am puzzled, as I thought the next oil change would be due around 10,000. I have to tell you that I occasionally drive very long routes (I just did a 1,000 miles journey), but most of the time I drive very short routes, like about 2 (yes, two) miles at a time back and forth to my workplace and so on.

Question is: is this right? Do I have to change the oil already because of my short driving distances, or did the Dodge dealer who serviced me the first time not reset the internal messaging system properly?

Thanks for any tips and help!

Well since it came on the first time at 2500 miles and then came on again at 5000 miles then it seems like its working fine to me. That model just may give you 500 miles notice to play with is all. This is just a best guess really.

Sounds like a question for RamTech to me.

The oil change indicator is functioning properly. Max interval for oil changes is 6,000 miles and the indicator is duty cycle based, not mileage based. This means it accounts for total engine run time among other factors.
