Default Alpine Type R Components Question

Hi All, I have a 98 1500 and recently replaced my factory front door speakers with a set of Alpine Type R 6.5 components and they sound horrible. The mids and lows were better on the factory speakers. The head unit is an old Panasonic 50watts x 4 and there is no amp. I did put a set of foam baffels behind them. My question is are these speakers not for mids and lows, is the head unit to under powered or are the baffels suffocating them? Its so bad that all the bass settings and the EQ is set that there are no lows and it still distorts on medium volume. The highs are crystal clear though. Thanks for any input.

It's possible that you don't have enough power to drive them adequately. I'm guessing that the 50x4 rating on your head unit is peak power and not true RMS. If I recall correctly they are capable of 100W RMS and are somewhat power hungry. I have the type-s in my truck driven by a MRP-F240 Apline amp and they sound good.

You definitely need a good amp to push those speakers. They are rated at 100 watts RMS / 300 watts max @ 4 ohms. They just aren't getting the power they need.

Yea Ram Tech I think the rms on the stereo was around the 20watt area. I bought a MRP-F300 amp to power them but didnt want to run amp wire in this weather. I never knew that not having enough power for the speaker would make it sound like crap. Thanks for the help guys!

Underpowering a speaker is just as bad, if not worse for them than overpowering. Underrpowering can cause clipping which can blow out tweeters from overheating.

Yea that is definitely true. You can screw up the speakers if you dont give them the power they need. That is definitely the problem you are having with the speakers. Just throw that amp on and you will have symphony in your truck!
