Default Exhaust Brake

Hey guys. I love this feature on my new Ram, works great when towing. I had a friend of mine suggest that I ride around all the time with it on to help keep some kind of filter clean. Is this true? Does anybody else do this?

lbp

I don't have that on my Truck but it sounds interesting. It must be only on the Duallys, what does it do? Does it work like the a big truck engine braking?

Yes it works just like the big rigs. It helps the rig brake downhill, you can really feel the engine braking. It is awesome!! I don't know how I did it without one before.

It also has to be a Diesel thing because I have never heard of an engine brake on a gasser. I don't think it would be good to use it ALL the time. It's bound to put more stress on your engine.

I believe that all of the Cummins' above the base model are standard with it. I drove an SLT and Laramie SRW and both had the Ex brake listed as standard. And yes, you can definately feel it work.

The Turbo Cummins diesel engines are now standard with the exhaust brake system. It is a supplemental braking system used to help slow vehicle by restricting the flow of exhaust gases and incresasing back pressure against the pistons inside the engine, slowing the crankshaft rotation and thus slowing the vehicle. This results in up to 170 retarding horse power to provide inhanced vehicle controle and decreased brake wear. IMO I would tend to only use the exhaust brake system when towing or hauling to help hold back the truck on down hills.

Thanks knsram, I appreciate it. That was my thought exactly, just didn't make much since to drive around with it on all the time. My friend suggested it to save on brakes and to help keep some particulate filter from filling up so fast. I would tend to think that it would put too much wear on the engine and other parts. If it was designed to be on all the time, then it wouldn't be a push button control.

I had a 2007.5 Ram 2500 with the exhaust brake and Dodge engineers recommended using it all the time as it helped keep the DPF clean and the turbo clean. the 6.7 cummins in the 2007.5 had many problems with the trubo . I ran my exhaust brake all the time except on icy roads and it created no problems. Each time I took it in for servicing the tech reminded me to keep the exhaust brake on all the time. There were some lengthy threads on that subject over on the Dodge cummins diesel Forum. They gave a much better explanation for the need to run it all the time than I have here.

Yea guys it is only on the diesel trucks. I dont know how the Hemi can get an exhaust brake if it doesnt have a turbo on it. I think using it all the time would be a good thing. It owuld keep it clean and would help keep your brakes last longer. At least like that you can use your brakes when really needed.

Its pretty cool how it works. When you let your foot off the throttle then she starts to brake. Such a simple idea and it works great
