Unhappy Muffler Dissatisfaction? :(

So I got my muffler installed today, and I've got to say, I'm highly dissappointed. I got the MagnaFlow with 2.5" piping because that's the only size the shop had in stock, and the shop guy told me I'd get the sound I wanted. So 45 minutes later, I get my truck back, and while I've got a LOT of power back in my truck, the damned thing sounds like a freaking kitten now!!! That's not what I wanted at alllllllllllllllll. What do I do? Is there an inexpensive way to get that growl back? Should I take it back and say "wtf you liars?!" Should I suck it up and suffer? I'd prefer not to take it off and lose the power, but I want my big burly growly sound back.

Not sure what to tell you, I'm thinking I would go back and tell them you want the 3" piping.
This makes me wonder because right mow I have a 18" magnaflow, single, with 3" piping and was thinking of upgrading to a dual 14" exhaust but it only come with 2.5 " out. I was not sure how that would affect things.

what length of magnaflow did you get? There are several sizes and they'll determine how loud your exhaust sounds.

I didn't have a muffler on beforehand, because the guy I bought it from sawed it off so he could have the loud sound. I loved that sound, but highhhhhly doubt I'd pass smog without a muffler.

As for the size of it, I'm not sure. When he showed it to me, he told me to look straight through it and "see the curves" and I couldn't see straight through to the other side, so I think it's one of the shorter, stubbier ones instead of the longer "see-through" types. I don't know if that even makes sense, let alone helps, but I'll see if I can measure it later today. x_x

All depends on muffler size number of baffles/design of the baffles. Some mufflers also contain fiberglass. Also you can run with high flow cats or no cats at all. My first muffler was a big dissappoinment i went with a cherrybomb vortex kit with 3 in 2.5 out duals. Sounded alright but not to where i wanted it so i swapped the muffler out for a cherrybomb extreme which is a single chamber muffler and baaaaam sounds like i wanted.

you should have been able to look all the way though the center, like looking through a piece of 20" long pipe

The muffler isn't a part of the emission control system...no problem passing the sniffer test without one.

MagnaFlow is one of the best mufflers on the market at any cost, period. You will have the most HP with the Magnaflow but maybe not the sound you want. Remeber you are coming from no muff, so any sound deadening device is going to be a drastic reduction in "growl".

2.5 to 3.0 diameter is going to have none to little affect on sound quality or volume. HP, yes, but not sound.

I thought a muffler filtered all of the crap coming through your engine and whatnot in regards to what it spits out and gets tested on? o.O If not, why the heck did I just spend $130 on a new muffler?!?!

noise pollution?

and as far as 2.5 or 3.0" having little difference... beg to differ. of course it depends on what engine you are running that will have certain things happen to your power curve. classic example... my 69 Roadrunner 383 HP2 335HP had 2.25 or 2.5 when i got it (i know it wasn't factory but not sure since it's been a long dang time), and loved the power, but it was all rusty nasty looking and didn't sound that great. so i went to local muffler shop. after they ripped off the old, they asked what diameter i wanted (since diameter didn't change the price up to 3")... being new to the car world, i just told em,'put on the biggest ya got!". which was 3". got it done. and dannnngggg did it sound good... really deep rumble, but GEEEKERS... was it gutless down low. pulled great once you revved it up. wouldn't lay rubber as easily anymore.

so i would have to equate that to bigger exhaust not providing key characteristics (and a whole lot of other stuff about thermodynamics and flow velocity, blah , blah, blah) at lower RPMS. sure helped it breath higher up. but hey, what do i know. just an average guy that turned wrenches.
