a tip is just for looks really but go ahead and get one if u want. I still say get a glasspack if u like loud. not all glasspacks are created equal either. The one on the dodge is really super short so its loud as H%LL but i have one on the buick thats long and it has a deep growl with no popping. The buick actually sounds better. wonder if i could swap motors? j/k id have the worlds first front wheel drive ram

All the magnaflow mufflers have the same straight through flow of a "glasspack" and sound mellow. If you want a good sound go with them. A glass pack has no gain over a good muffler except noise. I have an 18" Mag and can look right through it.
And being from Cali, that is the last place you want to get busted for something like a muffler

Now, any recommendations on WHICH one? Universal? Performance? XL? Does it need to be a specific shape? I'm not familiar with mufflers and such, is there a place I can go to find out my sizes without having a shop charge me an arm and a leg (trying to do my own repairs and mods, when possible)? Are tips necessary?

Not having a muffler already makes this much more frustrating. Sorry for sounding like such a newb.
I'm not sure which kind of muffler, but I'd Imagine it would just be the universal. And the size is 2.5" I believe for a 5.9. Are you running just one pipe underneath?

just clamp on some 18 inch Magnaflows or the new Magnaflow glass packs, pass the smog, & put it on the shelf

I think a flowmaster sounds the best, i can hear my truck idleing from 100 yards away thats what i love about it and when im standing in the kitchen and my trucks acrossed the street haha. The origional 40 series sounds amazing!! on the 360 my brother has it on his truck and that with duals would sound awesome. It literally sounds like a muscle car at WOT. i have a super 44 flowmaster thats a bit more mellow but i kinda wish i woulda got that annoying 40 series haha.

I have dual 40's and it is freaking loud lol. Sounds good around 2-2500 rpms. But at WOT it's just screaming.

http://planetmagnaflow.com/ is a good site for looking at all the muffler options they have, and they can be purchased tax free / free shipping if you find one you want! I loved them, plus they gave me a military discount!!!!

Here is the cat-back stuff for your truck
