Default Truck Shells and MPG

Hi - I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9L engine. This wonderful truck gets about 23.5 mpg in town and an astounding 30.3 mpg on the highway. I am not complaining.

The truck is currently equipped with a hard tonneau cover, which I am sure helps the mpg on the highway. I am planning to replace the tonneau cover with a fitted truck shell, probably a Snug-Top, ARE or Leer. The Snug-Top is most attractive because of its more aerodynamic rear end.

Does anybody know how this might affect highway mpg? I'm assuming that it will drop somewhat, but I would like to hear from other forum members who have converted their trucks to shells and what they experienced in mileage effects.

If you are getting that kind of mileage I wouldn't touch a darn thing. Just sounds to good to be true. A tonneau and a camper shell do approximately the same thing for gas mileage. What have you done to your truck to get that kind of mieage?

MythBusters a while back did an episode where they checked fuel mileage on trucks with tonneau and caps... they "busted" the myth, said that a truck with an open bed get's the best mileage

I don't think you'll see a significant difference in your mileage. There might be a little bit of a change, but it shouldn't be drastic

I didn't lose any mileage when I installed my Snug Top.

Think about it trucks nowadays are engineered so that the inside of the tailgate doesnt cause drag unlike the boxy trucks of years past if you put a piece of paper in your bed and drive what happens it swirls around do that in a 80s truck itll rise up and fly out.

My dad's 06 5.9 CTD get's right around that amount. He's got an edge chip and AFE intake and it get's like 18 pulling a boat. Just insane.

As has been said the myth that you will get better mileage with a cover is untrue. The bed design of the truck creates a circular pocket of air in the bed from air hitting the tailgate, diffusing back to the cab, and then up to repeat the same pattern. Once you are at speed this keeps air from coming into the bed. A truck with the tailgate up yields more mileage than one with a cover on it. The covers are slightly more aerodynamic but you also add weight so that cancels it out. Nice truck tho!!!
