Default 5.9L t56 tranny conversion

Well...

I've been pondering this evil idea in my head for awhile now, and, I grabbed the pedals, lines, clutch master...etc, the steering column plastic, the gear indicator block off plate, and the 5 speed console all out of a junkyard truck.

Well...I'd love to put a t-56 trans into my SS/T. Nothing like a manual tranny

But, my question is, is it realistically possible?

I would need a bellhousing, a custom driveshaft, a flywheel, some clutch (I don't know what car I would buy the clutch for), a slave cylinder (same issue as the clutch).

But, has anybody done anything like this or know where I should start. As I said, I have all the little things...now, I just need the transmission part. Even stuff like making the speedometer work and all, and making the computer not throw codes.

I would consider the 5 speed that came in the Rams, but, they aren't even rated for the stock power out of a 5.9L, so, I would be afraid to even put one of those in.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know where I would get a bellhoiusing, or, if the Viper V10 bellhousing is the same.

And, don't worry, I would keep the stock trans/pedals...etc. This is just one of those things thats for more fun whilst driving. Automatics, while they are faster in the 1/4 mile, are not nearly as fun in the twisties As a matter a fact, my SS/T is the only automatic I've ever owned, and, its the only thing I hate about my truck...haha.

I'm not sure who told you that a stock tranny isn't rated for your engine, but they're wrong. There are 3 versions available for your truck and the NV3500 was mated to the 3.9 V-6 engines. There are two versions of the NV4500 for your truck. A standard version for gas engines and a HD version for diesel and V-10 powered trucks. If you're looking for strength, check into the NV 4500 HD model.

The gas engine version of the NV4500 is only rated at 300lbs/ft tq, which, my engine stock makes 345lb/ft tq, so, I see that as being explosive.

As far as teh HD NV4500...from what I've heard about that trans, 1st gear is a granny gear (which I don't need), and its clunky shifting (like a big HD truck)

My truck, being a 2wd 5.9L fun to drive sporty truck, I'd rather have something that shifts more car like. I hear the gas engine NV4500 is a nice trans, but, I've heard of people breaking them with stock 5.2L (since they were never offered with a 5.9L).

I'm sure they can be built up...but, that starts getting a little more involved since I know nothing of tranny internals...haha.

You've got me curious about that now. I'm thinking the NV3500 was offered behind the 5.9 but can't be sure without researching it a bit.

everything I've ever read has said that. Now, my dad claims he saw a Dakota R/T (which is a 5.9) with one, but...maybe its because the Dakotas are lighter? But, then again...maybe it was just done up like an R/T or someone swapped it in.

Is there a thread or something on 5 spd. conversions? I dont want to rebuild my tranny fifteen times. I plan on keeping my truck forever and it needs a tranny. Cant we swap it all and be done with it?
