Default R/T Tow Rating

According to the 2011 Ram brochure, a Regular cab, SB, 4x2, 5.7L with a 3.21 ratio can tow 7,100 lbs; 3.55/3.92 ratio can tow 9,100 lbs. Any idea why an R/T with a 4.10 ratio would only be able to tow 5,000 lbs? I don't know, but a 5,000 lb tow rating for a full size 1/2 ton truck with a 390 HP engine and a 4.10 gear just doesn't add up.

I asked the same question earlier. The 5000 lbs is the rating if you use the bumper for towing. If it was ordered with the class 4 hitch it increases the toeing capacity.......JB.

i assume they would only give you the tounge weight because the hitch adds weight and the whoel idea behind the RT is speed and being light.

The RT torque converter is not made for towing and thats the reason for the lower tow rating. Do not tow over the limit or you will destroy the converter.

Hey i think part of the lower tow rating is also the rim and tire combo.

Rim and Tire combo??????HUH!?? are you serious? I'm sure its due to the fact that the r/t doesn't come with the class 4 hitch like someone else posted. the rims and tires have some but very little to do with the towing capacity...

Yes actually I know that the tires and time effect it. And the sport tires have an even lower tow.rating than the passenger tires on the 20s. I spoke.to my dealer about it and he said the tires and rim combo do lower the rating and my et has a class 4 hitch just like 09 sport I.had. so please take your.smart ass replies else where there is absolutely no reason to be a jackass

Actually, my 2011 R/T did come with the factory class IV receiver hitch. That's what really had me confused as to why you would need a class VI reciever with only a 5,000 lb tow limit.

The overall circumference of the tire is what would hinder a tow rating not the diameter of the wheel. Example; my 2007 Hemi had 275/60R20's while the R/T has 285/45R22's. The actual circumference of the 22's on the R/T is less than the 20's on the 2007. 100.8" vice 103.6". So when calculating rolling distance, the 22's should actually be rated to tow more!!!

Never really thought about the torque converter being the weak link, but that makes more sense to me than the tires. The R/T's higher stall would not be designed for heavy tows but quick get-aways. And believe me, it's got that one covered. Love the truck. Thanks for all of the comments.

I just looked up some tires from the service dept.
275-60-20 had a load rating of 3074 lbs and
285-45-22 had a load rating of 2337 lbs
If I hooked my boat behind a 22" equiped Ram I would be overweight for those tires and therefore for the Ram. 20s would be fine.
BTW- torque converters carry the same part # according to parts.
Ram has to consider the lowest rating of their tire suppliers when they set the tow #s.

Towing; Axle Ratio !!!!!! tire size ! With Ford,Chevey,Ram all have low and high tow rating with "Axle Ratio"!
