Default Replace air induction tube?

Hello, I just recently purchased an 11 1500 quad cab, and oh yeah..its got a Hemi. I was looking a t CAIs and had a thought. Seems as though the factory air box is pretty much a CAI. Is it possible to change the filter with a free flowing unit and then replace the tube that goes to the throttlebody? Has this been done and would it work? I still haven't made it home yet to see my truck (overseas military) but will be home shortly. I can take a closer look at the house, but was wondering if this has been discussed.

Thanks,

First off welcome to the ForumZ...I hear that the drop-in performance filters like K&N are great and it doesn't effect the tube or box.
If your replacing the intake tube and the filter you might as well go with a CAI kit as the tube and filter are what a CAI really is

I think the benefits would be pretty much the same as adding an aftermarket CAI if you can find good tubing to go to the throttle body and drop in a K&N.

I will have to take a close look at the factory air box when I get home. If a person can reuse the stock box and change the filter to either a drop in or a K&N cone type then change the tube going to the throttle body. This would have the same effect as doing a full blown CAI? Seems as though it be cheaper and plus a lot of the CAI systems just install their own "factory" air box with their own tube. Just a thought...give me something to do while I burn up my 60 days of leave when I get home.

First of all thank you for your service to our country!

Welcome to the forum, I bet your excited to get home to see your truck! The stock airbox is a cold air intake, it is kind of a waste of money to buy a whole cai kit. Airraid makes "jr kits" that are a drop in filter and the tube, like what you are looking for, but not sure if they have them for the latest years(they don't make one for my 2010 4.7L), but the hemi is more popular so it may be out, and they are around $120... good luck Oh and you might find them cheaper one ebay, amazon, etc...

Thank you.

I will look into the airraid system, hopefully they have them for the late model trucks. If they have them I'll post it up.

Yes I am very excited to meet my new truck. I have already bought numerous doo-dads for it. Gotta tinker with it to make it mine.

Looks like they only have through 08 for the hemi and through 07 for the 4.7L. Prices increased also. I'm planning on buying a drop in for mine, and making a tube out of 4" pvc or similar, but haven't tried yet. I don't know that I'll be able to make a 90 degree bend that sharp with 4" pvc...I've done it with 2.5" pvc though.

I will have to look at the stock air box and see if the tube can be removed. I think that a suitable tube can be manufactured, or use the "do it yourself" components from airraid or another dealer. Worse comes to worse i can use metal rods to bend the tube and then maybe glass it. Just wanna try to recycle the factory box with a K&N or Amsoil drop in. Might be able to use a cone type in the airbox. Maybe get another box from junk yard and modify it. Hopefully getting on the plane to head back to US in a few minutes. It's like Christmas Eve for me!

Airaid is out, I've already asked about the intake tube. They won't sell them like that anymore, because they don't make any money You'll have to make a tube yourself. There are people on here running a homemade tube with pretty much the same effect as a full CAI. One guy couldn't tell the difference between his stock setup and the K&N complete intake kit
