Kleeeen is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Safety issue?????????????

One of the members here recently rolled his new Ram going around a corner after the rear wheels momentarily (can't think of the right wording) locked????? going around a icy corner.

I have noticed that when I am coasting to a red light/for traffic at approx 36/40mph the tach jumps up 400+ rpms and it feels like if I was on an icy corner the same thing might happen.

What's this all about?

The trans is downshifting. It happens when you have 390+ HP motor.

On the Dodge sense 03 and the 5 speed auto, the trans will down shift as you slow down and depending on how hard you apply the breaks it will down shift rapidly to get you stopped.

The unfortunate combination of icy road, curve and speed at the exact time the transmission down shifted was what caused the roll over. Not really a "safety issue."

Also doesn't help if you are in auto 4x4 vs 4x4 Lock, if the roads are bad I use 4x4 Lock and eat the loss MPGs. But that wont necessary save you from yourself or the act of God.

Since we were not there hard to tell what happened when the truck downshifted, so all we can do is assume, because a panic'd correction can easily lead to over correction.

That being said I am happy to read about how the truck and safety equipment did its job.

The easiest thing for people to forget about 4wd is that it is 4 Wheel Drive NOT 4 Wheel Stop and on ice it becomes 4 Wheel Slide.

I read that thread too and it was a guy in the south who was commenting on not getting snow much if I remember right? I think it was probably too fast in bad conditions rather than something that isn't normal for all vehicles. If you're able to roll a ram, the inertia you had going into it wasn't from a 15-20 mile an hour speed, it must have been faster and unsafe for icy roads, especially on stock tires.

i agree.. i read that post as well and, correct me if i'm wrong but the way i took it was the person was accelerating not decelerating when the truck down shifted...

It is interesting hearing the thoughts on how this happened, as I was really impressed on how my stock 20's and 4x4 handled during our latest snow/ice conditions. I barely notice the downshifting while slowing, but I can see how it could catch you by surprise if you were pushing the limits of ice and speed in a turn.

Personally, so far I am not a fan of all the "engineering" that went in to "traction control" on these new trucks. I grew up where there were no salt trucks or snow plows. The good Lord put the snow there and He took it off. I learned what to do if the vehicle fishtailed or started sliding. With this new fangled stuff, I have no idea how to react. Brakes start chattering when the wheels start spinning. You can't get enough wheel speed to make it up a slick hill. Now, I turn of the traction control when I get in, and if it is slick, I put it in 4L to get rid of the ESC too.

Before long the engineers will take all the driving out of driving and let the vehicles take over.
