Default towing hitch question

is there two different types or hitches from the factory? mine has a hitch on it but no place to put the insert. looks like to me you have to pop off round plastic cap on bumper to place your 2" ball. never seen a hitch like this just askin if there is two different types. thats the whole point of using a hitch is to get your trailer away from your tag and bumper so your less likely to put a dent in either one. any ideas

The hitch you want is Curt model 13333. It's a class III hitch that is just like the OEM receiver. The can be found for around $80. I got mine on eBay. Here's one for a good price.

That's correct, your truck should already have a large tubular support that comes right under the center of the bumper, then the class 3 hitch you can buy separate bolts up (2 or three bolts I think), and it is just the center part. Also, you can buy a class 4 if you need something for hauling over 6,000lbs (I think class 3 is limited to 6,000lbs) but it is a whole hitch that bolts up to the frame rails as well. I bought a curt class 4 for around $130.00, took about an hour to install. I'll take a picture under my truck tonight when I get home if you want so you can see how the class 4 bolts up.

the part that bolts to the vehicle is called a
Hitch receiver w/ 2" opening is what you want
http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2009_D...m%20Pickup.htm

then you will need a Hitch Ball Mount they come in many different shapes, raised, lowered, straight, or even a Step for climbing into the vehicle bed
http://www.etrailer.com/Ball-Mount
here are a few styles, again stay with the 2"
http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Ball...nch_Hitch.aspx
the main thing when buying a ball mount, is that you buy the style that will be at the right height so that your trailer will sit level when being towed
so if your vehicle sits high & your trailer sits low, you would want a drop ball mount, the drop would be according to the difference in the heights of the vehicle & trailer, drop hitches can be flipped over & become a raised mount
they also come in different shank lengths

here are some other ways to use your hitch receiver, like STEPS, lumber carriers, bike racks, etc
