Default Wheel size?

Hey ya'll, I just ordered the Rough Country 4 inch for my 2011 Ram 1500. On the website it says I can go with a 20" wheel with 5.5 in backspacing, or an 18" wheel with 5 in backspacing. Does anyone know if you can run a 17? I really do NOT want to go with a wheel that is bigger than 17, but I need to know for sure before I go ahead and pull the trigger. I've only found ONE wheel that I really like in an 18. If anyone is/has run this lift with 17's, I would appreciate the response. Obviously, pictures included if possible! Also, I've talked to Rough Country twice in the last two days. The first time I talked to them, they told me I had to run at least an 18. When I talked to them the following day, I wanted to know if those with stock 17's could keep those wheels on with the lift. I don't have the 17's, but I wanted to know if they were just blowing smoke. The response was that I could run 17's, but that it could NOT be the stock wheels. I'd like to find out one way or the other, BEFORE I spend a lot of money on wheels/tires that I can't use. Thanks in advance!

Prolly gonna have to have 4.5" BS on a 17. Plus it all depends on their replacement knuckle design..I know. No help lol. But something to really think about, I have seen 18's run pretty close price wise as 20's on tires. Not sure if thats the main concern for you as it is for me. some 18's I have seen are more now because of the flood of the 20's comming on new trucks I guess. Either way, I'm getting 17x9 with some good offset -12mm(if i remember right) and 4.5 BS..and I was seriously looking at this lift.

I figured about that for backspacing as well, but I just don't want to spend money on something I can't use, you know? The price difference between 17's and 18's is the other huge concern, other then the fact that I can't find the "right" wheel for me at 18. I never understood why all these new trucks are coming out with 20's on them. At stock height, this truck doesn't look like a real 4x4 anyway, let alone putting a bigger wheel on it. Maybe there is a deal with the tire companies, lol. I wish I had the replacement knuckle in hand right now. I looked at the Zone 4 inch as well, and that one says you can run a 17x8. I would be curious to find out if the size of their replacement knuckle is the same size as the one I'm going to get from RC. Anyone know?

BDS make a good quality 4 and 6, but they are pricy. Even with the Lifetime warrenty. BUT they do give proper specs on what rims you can use. I think zone is a sister company of bds..same lift basically..3-5 year warrenty only though.

Yes, Zone is a sister company of BDS, and they both look like quality products, I am just curious to know if the replacement knuckles from either of those are the same size as the replacement knuckle as my Rough Country. That, and the thing about the wheels...

Only thing is the recommend rim sizes since they modify the steering knuckle. So if they say 18 then it is 18. I dont think the price difference between the 17 and 18 is that much. The difference between a 17 and 20 is pretty big. Also trucks come with 20s from factory because it looks a lot better. The companies know that most people out there llike the look of bigger rims so it is more attractive to buyers. Not because they have a deal ith the tire company haha.

Look at Zone if you are worried about cost. They make good kits so it is nothing to worry about. It is not a sister company (well kinda) to BDS. I heard that the owners split from BDS and the other guy started Zone. That is why their kits are very similar. I think Zone is well priced just so they can undermine BDS in the market. Only problem is some people shop according to price thinking you get what you pay for. I definitely think like that so I went with Fabtech for my lift.

If you are going to run 35" tires with you 4" lift I would like to make a recommendation. If you like a big truck and that is what you are looking for then go wth a 6" lift. The price difference is not that much probably a couple hundred. You get a couple more inches which is pretty sweet. Also if you go with a 4" lift then you may as well go with either Ready Lift or Daystar for their level/lift kits. The Ready Lift kit lifts the truck 2.75" up front and 1.5" in the rear. It is pretty close to the 4" lift and it will fit 35" tires. The Daystar kit does the 2.5" front and 2" rear. I may be off on those numbers but pretty damn close. So the 4" lift would be only 1.25" up front and .5" in the rear extra lift for like $600......maybe look into something like that if your strapped for cash and want to make the truck look sweeet!!

JUST SAW YOU ORDERED THE KIT.............I guess foret what I said...I'll leave it for other people if they are interested in my B.S

Haha, I was sitting here reading like, I could have sworn the first sentence said that I just ordered my RC lift. Lol I was like why is he saying this stuff, but I got it now. The reason I didn't go with the Daystar or the ReadyLift is because I want to do it where I'm not going to have to worry about the death wobble or having too much angle on the CV's. Money isn't the issue, even though I see no reason to spend $500 more for something else if I don't have to. I think the RC is going to be fine for what I plan on using my truck for. I appreciate the answer. I have been talking to a guy that has the RC 4 inch, and he is running 17's with no issue whatsoever.

There is nothing better then experience to get your answer! If he has it and it works then there ya go!

Yea I wasn't sayin money is your issue, I was speaking in general. Yea I was rambling on and then read your post and saw you ordered it haha. I didnt want to erase everything since it seems like a waste of my time hahaha. I guess someone else can use that info

I'd love to know how you make out. I'm thinking of that kit for my truck and I'd like to do 17" rims just to get the extra thick tire look...

I talked to someone who is running the same 4 inch, and he has no issue clearing 17's (17x9, -12mm offset, 4.53 BS). Also, I have recently talked to a couple of guys that are running the RC 6 inch, and they are able to run 17's. I don't know this for sure, but I would say if the 6 inch can run them, there should be no reason a 4 inch can run 17's as well. If anything, wouldn't the knuckles on the 6 inch be bigger?
