This is my brothers truck im talkin about here .

allright so heres the deal im gonna tell you the story from the beginning.
my brother was getting on the highway after work one day and saw a truck coming had cruise ON but not SET. he had the peddle allmost to the floor, about 3/4 of a throttle. (me and my brother share the same likings for the sounds and power of the dodges so its hard to keep our foots out of it). while he had the peddle down that far he set the cruise and the peddle went all the way to the floor AND GOT STUCK THERE! he was screaming about 90 mph on i280 he was freaking out because it happened so fast and his first reaction was hit the brakes but the brakes wouldnt slow this thing down, so next point in action to slow himself down was throw it in neutral. and heres the kicker, it revved PAST 6000 RPMS!! .(he said thats one sound hes never heard anything make lol!) it did that for a few seconds and he shut the truck off going 90 with no brakes or power steering finally got stopped. i couldnt beleive this one, when he turned the key to the "on" position didnt try starting it the truck started by ITSELF! and once again revved past 6000!!. So he shut it off again waited about 15 minutes to think about what just happened. Finally he started the truck and drove off fine no problem with the truck after that. Now after this incodent happened a while later maybe 4 to 5 months later his truck up around 3000 rpms would make a nocking sound and got worse over time. maybe 2 weekends ago i did the plenum and intake gaskets and sealed a water leak and got all done with that, when everything was all back toghether it was running for about 15 minutes running good and i was just looking at it running, it started nocking really loud. it went from faint, to loud, to faint again and went away and never came back. last thursday my brother was on his way home and he was driving normally and the truck started nocking REALLY loud and it is, really loud. Horrible loud, it sounds to me like a rod bearing i think after that cruise control incodent happened the motors junk.

Has anyone ever experienced catastrophic failure like this like a rod bearing or spun bearings or anything, i wanna know what you guys think i should do with this because the problems really stumped me , and i just wanna put a different motor in it to be honest. Its a 1998 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9 and about 150,000 miles on it.

I feel bad for my bro any info will help me decide what to do

I've dealt with plenty of bearing failures. Instead of pulling this motor and calling it junk, why not pull the oil pan first and see what the rod and main bearings look like?

well i was thinkin about that but if the main bearings or rod bearings are bad wouldnt the crank be pretty scoared and have to be reconditioned or replaced? or i guess i could just see if there bad by shakin them couldnt i? see if theres any play in any of them.

Possibly. Then again I've fixed a couple of knocking engines by replacing the bearings and polishing the crank because the customer couldn't afford a new engine.

well we got a junkyard here in ohio cherry picked that sells engines for 275 any motor i think im just gonna do that possibly.

redbull hasnt been on in a while so ill fill everyone in. we found the crank was cracked in half and one of the thrrows is slamming against one of the main caps.. not good. we got the motor almost all the way out and were looking for a motor

UPDATE>>>>>.................... We baught a motor for 500 bucks from a junkyard in toledo ohio called A&D on lewis and detroit ave. It has 98,000 miles on it out of a 98 ram pickup, 5.9. we allready ordered some parts including headers and a double roller timing chain! and new gaskets to follow those. has anyone ever had clearance issues with the double roller? if theyve ever used one??? im hoping itll be a breeze.

I've installed em before on 5.9s and no issue. as soon as i get some money, i'll be doing it again to my current truck
