Default Transmission Operates in Fourth Gear Only

.

I can hear a buzzing sound coming from the transmission when the shift
lever is in park or neutral, the malfunction indicator light is lit, and the
transmission operates in fourth gear (or reverse) only. Will not downshift
or upshift out of fourth gear. I dropped the truck off at the dealer today.

Anyone care to speculate what is wrong with it?

One of the solenoid pack components such as a pressure sensor or shift solenoid.

I've had my transmission start and stay in 4th gear many times. A shudder/shake in the first 50 feet can be a part of the problem.

When the s/s happens, it will stall the engine. If it dosen't stall, the only way to clear out of 4th is to stop and restart the engine.

I always back into my dive so I always start in drive. This ONLY happens the first start of the day, and about 3 or 4 times a month. It has been in to the dealer noumerous times after it has happened and been cleared. They "Can not duplicate, must leave over night." I understand that but don't want them to have it for a few weeks.

I have taken into the dealer 3 times with it locked in 4th gear. They have had computer read outs all 3 times with it locked in 4th. The first time, it sat in the lot idling for 2 1/2 hours (not happy) before the trans man could get to it. That's when the S/M told me to bypass service sign-in and drive it into the garage.

So far, in 6 trips (they have to order parts, so two trips each) they have replaced: 1) Vbody Pkg, 2) Module-Powertrain Control, 3) Transduce-Pressure Sensor. The last "repair" (replace parts until you find it) was 1/18/11 so it may or may not be fixed.

Well today I started out to the doctors office and the Ram is locked in 4th gear again! Ambient temp here in Florida is 76 (sorry) so not a cold weather issue. As doctors and thier test will not wait, I could not drive it into the dealers garage this time. Maybe next time I'll not be time sensitive. It has happened many times (not documented by the dealer) but the next time they have it locked in 4th gear will be the fourth time.

Hello Lemon Law.

Studbuster, I have to wonder about the diagnostic competence of the people working on your truck. Intermittent faults can be maddening to locate and if it's electrical, it's twice as bad. Have you tried taking it to another dealership for this problem?

RamTech, The dealer called just now and said my truck is ready. The "stuck in fourth
gear" issue turned out to be an electrical problem with a connector at the top of the
transmission. A clip that holds it in place had not been flipped at the factory, so
it had come loose.

I was impressed with the service. Checking the truck in only took a minute yesterday
afternoon and the dealer gave me a ride home (he let me drive) in a 2011 Dodge
Charger R/T.

Oops! The electrical connector may not have been the problem after-all.
The truck is stuck in fourth gear again. I dropped it off at the dealership
Friday afternoon and they will have their transmission guy work on it Monday.

i've had the "stuck in 4th" about a month ago. It's a "limp home mode". As soon as the truck detects something with the transmission it locks in 4th. You have to turn off the truk to reset it. Mine started acting up when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Got the 4th gear thing. i Brought it to the dealer on a friday, they didn't find anything and couldnt replicate the problem.

Of course the truck started acting up again 15 minutes after the dealer had closed for the weekend. So i lost the truck for a whole weekend, and brought it back to the dealer the monday morning.

It took them 'till the next friday to figure out it was a faulty spring in the valve body.

hope they find your problem. really sucks to have issues with a new truck.

steve57 and Tob,

Please keep us posted on any and all repairs they try.

My problem is so intermittent I can't leave it at the dealer for them to find, waiting for it to happen again when I can drive it to the dealer in 4th. I have no noise, just start it up, drop it in drive and it is locked in 4th. Only way to clear it is to restart the engine.

Good luck on your fix!

did they try replacing the whole vavle body on yours??? that's how they figured it out on mine. Once he knew it was vavle body related he then dissasemble the vavle body and found the faulty spring which controls the vavle which is responsible for the 2nd set of clutches.

does yours shift weird? like in between 2 gears in particular? or does it just lock in limp mode right away?

I was very surprised to have this happen to me on a really cold day one morning at 3K miles.

Some will poo poo on this but, I let the engine warm up to operating temperature and with the engine running, slowly added a quart of Lucas transmission conditioner while shifting between D, N, and R. I have not seen this problem since then, 850 miles, and the tranny shifts very well.

I will wait for the 25-30K mark to drain and replace with a synthetic, or sythetic blend with a quart of the Lucas and will do this every 30K.

I've used Lucas every 30k miles in a 88 and 94 Jeep cherokee with transmission and transfer case fluid changes still going strong on the original transmissions / transfer cases at well over 200K miles. I've done this ritual for other vehicles too with excellent results and longevity. Only half a quart of the Lucas in the transfer case.

Some will poo poo this too. I've had vehicles with no drain on the tranny pan. I use an electric pump with a hose down the dip stick tube to pull out the tranny fluid. To get the most fluid out (closest to a flush) you'll need to run the engine with the tranny in drive until you just see the pump no longer drawing out the tranny fluid then shut off the engine. Let the vehicle sit over night to allow the fluid to drip through the filter back into the pan, which cleans the filter. Pump out the remainder in the morning, and refill with your favorite brand of fluid type as specified in the owners manual, which for the Ram is ATF+4.
