Default Posi Rear???

I have a 99' 1500 Ram sport 4x4. I just picked it up a few months ago. Today I noticed as I was backing out of my driveway in 2wd, my passenger side rear wheel was spinning on some ice. I actually got out of the truck to see what was going on suprised I wasn't moving.....I just assumed the rear was posi....the drivers side rear wouldn't grab. Is this normal or is my rear ****ed up?
Thanks....

It's normal if your truck didn't come with a limited slip.

I agree with RamTech... and just to comment, I think the term "Posi" is too loosely used. I hear many people using the term when describing how they "left two black marks when peeling-out"... when I tell them that unless they changed the gears, they do not have a "posi" rearend (most are late model trucks).. they are adament to disagree with me. Most people don't understand that limited slip does this as well, and any modern consumer vehicle is not going to have a "posi" rearend, but only either open-diff or limited slip. I am no ace mechanic but I believe very few vehicles came from the factory with a "posi" rearend, and those that did were only specially packaged cars/trucks ordered with the option. Maybe some people think that "posi" and limited-slip are synonymous terms?

Not ranting, just intrigued mainly...

i agree i had a chevy with an open diff and in the winter i like to play around a bit it was more difficult to get my chevy sideways than my dodge with limited slip where i just tap the gas and it would break sideways but i think some of the v10's came with an actual "posi" rear end, its a dana 70 where you can hear the tires chirping going around a corner just driving normal and roasts them equally doing a burnout :P. my buddy has a 98 v10. thats how ive experienced it. plus drifting in a full size truck on dry pavement is probably a good cantidate of posi lol.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. So, any pointers as to going to a limited slip diff???? Is it a difficult procedure? I'm pretty handy, just havent gone into this area of the truck yet. Thanks again!!

the easiest way to see if you have limited slip or not without jacking up the back or anything, take your vin number to your closest dodge dealership and tell them you want to see what options your truck came with. i did with mine to see if it came with keyless entry, and it says it was ordered with anti-spin differential rear axle...which i guess is a limited slip.
