Program you can buy for your laptop with cable to hook it up to an OBD II. I have seen some people use them when data logging, but I don't know what program they were using.

Yup, it's great for scanning codes and turning off the MIL light if you need to. I built my own interface and use easyobdII software on a laptop to access it. If you don't want to build the interface you can buy one. You can't tune with it, for that you need something like Diablo. Check out my thread at http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=54769

The software is free for a limited version and $20 bucks for a licensed copy without restrictions. You can download it here http://www.easyobdii.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=4

I'm guessing for that price it doesn't offer bidirectional controls and flash capability?

LOL, it's actually pretty decent for the price. Even the free version allows you to see allot of real-time parameters and displays any stored codes. If you buy it you get the full dashboard and can also plot data points.

Sounds like a cool set up. If there was a way to just go down the store and buy the cable (like buying a USB cable) it would be wonderful. Unfortunately most of us cant make our own cables or interface.

Cool! I'll look into that. Once you have a laptop and cable, software is the easy stuff. I'm sure over time more and more software will become available for the backyard mechanics.
