Default whining noise from engine

I have an 06 RAM, with the 5.7 hemi. The truck has a whininy noise coming from the front of the engine. Sounds like a power steering pump, but the pump has been replaced twice, along with the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley, but it still is making the same noise. It doesnt sound like it is coming from the alternator or the ac condensor. The dealer said that it could be the air pump. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be great because this noise is driving me nuts.

Thanks,
Travis

Start the motor up and verify the noise is there . Now shut it off , unload the serpentine belt and remove the belt from one pulley so the belt doesn't turn anything . Now start the engine for a brief couple seconds and see if the noise is gone . If it is , you now know the noise is being produced from one of those accessories . If the noise is still there , you need to start looking elsewhere , like maybe a vaccuum leak etc....

I know you said it wasnt the idler pulley but i'd double check, i had a noice and everything looked fine and couldnt really pinpoint the sound. When i removed the belt the pulley had completely disentergrated down to the metal bearing. worth a shot. i also agree with tom, thats some good trouble shooting advice.

Travis - wow! it sounds like we're having the same problem, I didn't notice your post initially, but noticed it as soon as I posted

http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=75027

I have no idea on this either, and its driving me crazy, but was actually thinking it might be power steering related (just based on where the noise is coming from)

to locate the noise, buy a mechanics stethoscope or use something like a cut off broom handle, place one end against the places where you think the noise is coming from & the other end in your closed hand, with your thumb & index finger above the stick, then place your ear against your thumb for ear protection

this is a tool that was used by everyone to find out which tappets were making the clicking noise, the noise travels up the stick & you can plainly hear it

Tom has presented a great troubleshooting idea! How did you make out?

Keep it simple, is the powersteering fluid at the proper level. If the system is low it will always have air in the fluid and will never stop whinning. As mentioned removing the serp belt will help to narrow down the cause and a stethoscope is your best friend for pinpointing the noise.

When I have a problem like yours, I remove the drive belt and spin each accessory by hand and check for any play or roughness. I also use the stethoscope on one that I feel is suspect while spinning by hand. Plus sometimes when you unload the tension of the belt you might see a pully actually drop slightly indicating a problem. Hope this helps and good luck with fixing your problem.

I haven't removed the belt from the engine yet, but the mechanic used a stethescope and said he thought it was the air pump. Right now the truck is under warranty so i am kind of inclined to let them replace as much as they want too. I checked the fluid level for the power steering, and it is at the full mark,
