Default Stress crack in windshield!

Hey all,

Guess it was a little too cold this morning. On my way to work I heard a snap, crackle and a pop, and sure enough, I watched a stress crack work its way from the left side of my windshield all the way over to the rightside and down into the seal.

Up to now I've had no rock chips or imperfections in my windshield, and I inspected along the crack to make sure there are none to provide a starting point for a crack. Anyone had experience with warranty claims and stress cracks?

Another concern of mine is that the new windshield, whether replaced under warranty or purchased, will not be a genuine Ram windshield, and won't have the epic signage at the top surrounding the rear-view mirror. This isn't major, but I would still be annoyed if I wasn't able to keep the truck completely OEM.

I should also note that I'm under 12k mi/20k km and 12 months, and I believe the windshield is covered for the first 12 months?

I could see tons of dealers would try to get out of this and say it was a stone cheaper somewhere. Hopefully you deal with a good one. I would think the dealer could recommend somewhere that could get you the OEM decal on the windshield.

Good luck.

That sucks man ! I just got my windshield replaced a couple weeks ago and decided to go with the aftermarket one with a tint strip all the way across. I originally wanted the OE but noticed you could only see the RAM HEAD LOGO from the inside and the one I got is exactly the same besides the logo and it has a full tint strip across the top and was a $100 cheapoer ! I'm happy with it and don't miss the logo like I thought I would cause now I don't have the sun glare I used to. Good Luck !

just a thought

when it is cold, below freezing, somewhere around 0 F , IF you turn your HEAT setting on HIGH & Blower fan on HIGH, when using DEFROST, you can easily crack your windshield
there are highlighted notes in your owners manual about it

i will try to bring the note up from the online site
http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html
i could not find the warning in the 2010 Ram manual

but, i found out if the crack was due to stress or chip from a rock or other object
it is called the A "ball point pen test" is often used to determine if there is a stress crack -- a ballpoint pen is run along the crack, and if it dips anywhere, it is not a stress crack. That is because with a stress crack, no glass actually comes off the windshield.
stress cracks are usually covered under warranty, chipped windshields are not usually covered

Thanks for the info! Sounds like a fair test. What I wonder though, is unless they have a guy in there who is 7 and a half feet tall, how's he going to reach to run a pen along the whole length of the windshield?

Sorry to hear of the bad luck . I wouldn't worry to much about it being a factory piece of glass . I'm sure it's not gonna be the first time . As long as they can replace it and it doesn't leak .
