Default fuel mileage???

I have recently purchased a 2001 ram with a 5.9 auto ext cab shortbed 2wd.

My issue is that we used to have a 97 ram with a 5.2 auto. Our fuel mileage was17-18 mpg

the truck gets no better than 13 mpg hwy Is this avg? or is it too low?.

Besides the obvious (tire pressure, throttle control, tune up) any ideas?

I'm not sure if in Texas you run oxygenated fuel in the winter . If you do , that really effects mileage . You can also check for any vacuum leaks . Back last winter , with the 3 blizzards the Baltimore area had , I was averaging 7.6 mpg . Sucks . I did a water pump on my truck this past summer and did find quite a few vacuum leaks that I went ahead and fixed . Seems to have helped . Heres a pic of one of the lines that I found several leaks on . Trace it all the way from the throttle body , to the firewall , then to the front of the r/f fender .

Hi Malebiker! I've got almost the same truck (2001 5.9L extended cab short bed 4x4) and I started out with that same gas mileage. I've had my big boy for about 5 months now and I'm a major highway driver (56miles a day, twice a day, 5 days a week), and that 13mpg is as good as I've gotten. I've noticed with mine that if I keep up on the oil changes and keep my fluids in top shape, my mileage stays around the 12-13, but lately I've been slacking and it's dropped down to 10-11. Maybe it's just how I'm driving, but it seems more consistent with the times I've checked and watched my fluid levels.

If you find a way to get higher gas mileage, LET ME KNOW!, cause that would be awesome. But it's highly likely that that 13mpg is gonna be as good as it gets. =\

I have a 94 5.9 4x4 short box, and 13 is as good as i get !!!! i would think a 2 wheel drive should get a bit better because the 4x4 gear weighs a bit !!!! Make sure you have the stock size tires, that could make a huge difference. Also, after i gutted my cat out, i got better milage. If your truck has over 100k and has the stock converter, consider gutting or changing it. hope this helps a little .....

Drive slower on the highway.....if you do 75 your mileage is gonna suffer big time. I get about 13.5-15 on the highway doing about 65-70 average.

well, my lil 03 only gets 12-13 if i drive normal, but if i baby the HE&& out of it, i can muster 14.9. 13 miles 1 way commute to work at 65-67 mph and i've got 3.55s pegleggin it. TOTALLY stock.

miss my 03 4.7 qc 2wd. it got 14 in normal driving at 65-70. take it down to 55 and i could eek out 18mpg w/ 3.92s Sure-grip

I get 10. I recently got a Superchips and I am testing to see what the best mileage is.

I pulled 11.3 on my last fill up. Let's just say I was pretty darn excited!
