Default How long does the Hemi last?

Hello everyone,

Well this is the first time I have ever owned a Dodge Truck. I have always been a Ford guy until recently. I plan on keeping my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 until it falls apart. THe only reason I traded my last truck is because it was starting to have major issues. My Ram has 101k miles on it, how long can I expect this engine to last? I know the owners manuals scheduled maintenance only goes to 150k. what maintenance happens after 150k? How long can I expect this engine to last?

The engine has been taken care of almost perfectly, it was once a lease truck for a long time and it has a stack of paperwork of scheduled maintenance. I just recently did the coolant flush (like the manual calls for) and did an oil change. I plan on taking very good care of this truck, and once the engine goes ill just replace it.

as long as it was taken care of, 200000 miles + is doable.

There are plenty of 200k+ hemis running around. I service my truck on or before the intervals so I expect to get closer to the 300k mark if I keep it that long. I know the transmission probably wont make it that far but I expect it to go at least 180k.

Modern gas engine are extremely over build due to the rigorous testing they go through so I wouldn't be surprised in 5-10 years to see plenty of 300k gas rigs running around.

I would say other things will nickle and dime you to death long before the hemi does.

True on the nickel and diming - seems to be the case with prior vehicles. I have 145K on mine right now and it will be five years old this August. I did purchase a Max Care plan when the truck was new, as I do a fair amount of driving. I've had recurring issues with the rear differential and exhaust manifolds. That's pretty much been it so far - no nickel/dime stuff yet but we'll see when sensors start going, hoses, etc. My goal as well is 300K - can't afford a new truck for a while so this one has to last!

Reading all the posts on here makes me a lot more confident in the HEMI. I really really enjoy this truck. I went to the dodge dealership to have them fix my alignment, and I was looking at the 2015 model RAMs.. I can't believe how far Dodge has come in quality. If my truck lasts, you can count me a firm Dodge Ram Man

My hemi is at 324,000. We have another at the shop at 322,000, and another service truck that was recently retired has 276,000.

Preventative maintenance cures all. Kind of like the whole 'apple a day' thing, except if you feed your hemi apples you will attract bees.

After 150k wash, rinse, repeat. I don't think the service manual is there so much to tell you when to service your truck, but so you can see how the intervals are spaced. For example I think the 5 speeds are supposed to get the trans fluid changed at 60,000 and 120,000 miles per the schedule. I read this as saying change the trans fluid every 60k, so at 180k, 240k, 300k, etc... it would also be changed.

I plan on doing the same for my truck, just replacing the engine once it goes and keep going. Same for the trans. Barring irreparable body or frame damage I don't plan to get rid of it, everything else is just a wear part with a service and replacement interval.

There is no reason that most modern engines can't easily make it to 300k with proper preventive maintenance. This guy is getting diesel-esque longevity from his Hemi: http://www.allpar.com/cotm/13/caldwell-ram.html

xxaler, what year are those Hemis at your shop you were speaking about?
Mine is 2011, the one with 322,000 is a 2012, and the 276,000 is a 2013. We also have a 2009 with the 4.7L that has been a shop plow truck for the past 3 years that is at 397,000. All these trucks get driven by 3+ different people per day, and get absolutely ragged on. I bought mine knowing this, hell, I sat in the passenger seat the day we put $2000 worth of winter tires/rims on it (OEM, from dealership) with another guy and he basically did autocross in 4x4 with traction control right off.
