Default Altering Plug Wires

Hey Guys, I have heard from unreliable sources that buying a 2nd pair of the short plug wires and eliminating the cross-over wires will gain performance and mileage. Theory being that using both plugs to fire a jug will increase performance.

Anyone done this? Good results? Downside?

thanks - Bash

They already do.....fire at the same time that is.

In the 5.7, each coil fires twice during the cycle, once on compression and again on the top of exhaust. If you look closely, #1 and #6 cylinders cross over to each other, as do 2 and 3, 4 and 7, 5 and 8. When a piston reaches compression, it has one plug fired by the coil at the cylinder, and the other plug fired by the 'sister' coil.

As it is more difficult to generate a good spark in a compressed environment, this system uses 2 coils fired simultaneously to achieve a reliable dual plug operation without installing massive coils and/or the electronics to go with them.

Who ever thought this one up, was definitely thinking outside the box.

Interesting.
I was lead to believe the wire that crosses over was firing to burn off extra crap; more like an emissions thing. Then by consolidating one coil to one cylinder you would create a hotter spark and more power.
I dont disagree with the snake oil theory. Wondering what y'all thought of this.

I guess it 'might' help out with emissions, but I would be surprised if it did.

Shorty wires are mainly to clean up the criss cross stock wires, no real performance just looks. They are not recommended for nitrous or boosted engines, chance of backfire. If you want a true double spark you need to convert to the 06-08 coil pacs and composite valve covers. Already went through this and went back to full length msd wires. Hope this helps.

Could be wrong, but i believe 3rd Gens with the crossovers fired only 1 of the 2 plugs in the cylinder on compression and the 'crossover' plug on the opposite bank fired purely for emmisions after combustion was essentially 'over'.

I have heard of folks running the crossovers back to the 'original coil side' to enable both plugs in the same cylinder to fire at the same time.

4th Gens already fire both plugs at the same time in the same cylinder.

My 2004 Ram 2500 fired both plug simultaneously, as did my 2008 Ram 2500. Not sure if this was also the case with the 1500, but can't see why it would be any different.

I haven't checked by 2010 1500, but would be surprised if it was different.

A little more digging reveals that this is a trick for the 02-05 HEMI's, and then in 06-newer they have the coils firing the same cylinder.

As stated above, it is an emissions thing, where the 'crossover' wire is firing on an exhaust stroke.

Thanks for humoring me on this. If you want to know more about it, Google 'Taylor Shorty Wires'
