Default 3500 rear ratio opinions

Hello guys,
I currently have a 2003 quad cab 3500 4x4 single rear wheel, short bed with diesel, 6 speed and 3:73 gears. I am interested in getting a crew cab dually 4x4 with diesel and 6 speed manual transmission. I can't really decide what gear ratio to get, 3:73 or 3:42. My current 3:73 work great and always have plenty of power. I get great mileage. i was thinking about 3:42 to get better mileage because I understand that these higher HP engines (mine only has the 305hp/555trq engine). I will be pulling the following:nothing, or 16ft enclosed trailer or 40 ft 5th wheel camper (about 13000lbs) Does anyone have any opinions?

Thanks in advance.

3.42:1 gears are NOT offered in any of the Rams. The numerically lowest gearset you can get is 3.73:1.

With the 3.73s being a no charge upgrade from the 3.42s I'd go with the 3.73s. Just in case you end up going with a bigger tire down the line you won't have to worry about a gear swap.

According to all of the info I have seen, 3:42 gears are available, in a 2011 at least.

I am not really the type to go changing tire size so I am not concerned about that. I am really looking to get the best fuel mileage, without sacrificing "towing power". I have the 3:73 and get great milegae and power. I am just wondering if I can get better mileage with the 3:42 but still have good pulling power.

Does anyone have this combo that could give me some input?

I saw the gears available on the website where you build your own truck too.
If bigger tires aren't in the plans the 3.42 would prob be your best bet....especially since you'll have 800 ft lbs of torque available!

If you know what ratio 6th gear is on that manual you can figure out the rpm difference here. Use the second one down titled "for specific transmission ratio."

If you look at Ddoge's website and go to 2011 Dodge Ram trucks 2500 & 3500 specs page you will find that all 2500's come standard with 3.73 and 3500's come standard with 3.42. Which to me seems a little backwards since most people gettin 3/4 and 1 tons are for hauling and pulling and would thus be better equipped with the lower gear ratios. You can opt for either the 3.42 or 3.73 ratio with out additional charge, but not for the 4.10. believe most owners will never really notice any significant difference in MPG unless making extreem changes in gear ratios, such as 3.42 to 4.10 as well with tire sizes.
