Default Factory Mirror and Compass

Hi All,

My 09 Ram 1500 had the factory mirror with the microphones and the Compass. I replaced the mirror with a Gentex mirror with the rear view monitor built in.

After the replacement, the compass stopped working and just displays two dashes (--) in it's place on the dash. I've checked the harness going to the compass module, tryied to recalibrate it with no success. I took the truck back to the dealer and they ran diagnostics and are blaming the removal of the mirror as the culpret. I'm not sure I believe them because although the error does exist, the error should only be from the hands free (bluetooth).. I've looked over the wiring diagram, and there seems to be no connection between the mirror and the compass.. I'll be putting the original mirror back on to see if that can help restore it.

If it does, I'm considering coming up with something to replace the microphone circuit, but I'll need to be able view the diagnosis codes and reset them while I try my replacement circuit.

Does anyone know what I need to read these codes and reset them? Will a OBDII code viewer work, or will I need better model?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I'm not exactly sure how to fix your problem but I would be interested in purchasing your OEM rear-view mirror if you could PM me if your interested in parting with it. Also I'm assuming that its the same mirror that would be on the 2011 that is on yours

Yesterday, I put the OEM mirror back on and took the truck back to the dealer. They then miraculessly found that there was a wiring short between the compass and the hands free which was causing the problem. Then when I reinstalled the rear view monitor mirror, the compass remained working. Looks like they'd rather blame it on the mirror replacement then find the actual cause of the problem.

Lesson learned? Put the oem mirror back on before service so they can't blame you for something that they should be able to diagnose and fix.

I'm still interested in finding a code reader that will do everything on the truck, so if you have any suggestions, please reply.

Thanks,
Andy

Have to love the dealer they are quick to point fingers instead of trying to figure out the problem. Glad to see that everything is working now. If your interested I'm willing to take that mirror off of your hands as long as it's fully functioning. If your interested let me know and let's see if we can come to an agreed price.

Hi Space85,
I tried to PM you but I haven't been on the forum long enough to do that..

I think I'll hang on to the OEM Mirror in case I have other issues with the truck that they try and blame on the aftermarket mirror again. It's a quick exchange between the two and easier than arguing with the service manager (who now understands that I was correct the last time we argued - LOL)

Thanks for the offer.. If I decide to part with it in the near future, I'll let you know.

Andy
