Default 2008 Ram 1500 Big Horn

Been poking around here quite a bit lately checking up on things. I have a 2008 ram 1500 Big Horn w/the 20" rims and 265/60/20 setup. I have read quite a bit on improving mpg, tuner, diy cai, exhaust all improve performance and improved mpg is a byproduct of that.

I'm currently getting around 11.5-12 in town, not enough time on the highway for a solid reading. I also must confess that w/the 4-5 tanks that I've run through her has been 85/87 octane fuel...will running 93 help?

My grandfather has an 08 ram 1500 w/the 17" rim combo and he is getting 15+ around town. I know that the rims are heavier but certainly not to that degree. What are some things I can look at to improve mpg? Will the tuner and diy CAI be the cheaper fixes and help improve?

TIA, and great site

That's a great looking truck! Welcome!

Running a higher octane will help. It's just the battle of how much you save vs. how much you spend at the pump.

Now, if you do get a CAI or make one yourself, make sure it has a heat shield. Otherwise you're completely defeating the purpose of a COLD Air Intake.

As far as the tuner goes, most people go with the DiabloSport for the Hemi's. That's why there's a whole section of the forum dedicated to it. A tuner paired with a CAI and the higher octane fuel will help you mpg's. If you can manage to keep your foot out of it with that new power . I'm not sure how much gains you'll see, but with those three together I don't see how it wouldn't be possible to see 14-15.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Hope you enjoy the forum!

thanks! I'm a very mpg conscious driver so I'm hoping that cai and tuner (probably go diablo) will help! Might change to synthetic for engine oil as well..she has 70K on her.

I've been experimenting with 89 and 92 octane gas and like what I see. You might try it. At .10 -.20 cents/gal diff, it's a cheep experiment for a couple tanks.

To answer your question ... i run 87 on my ram all the time with now issues ...now i avg 12-13mpg in the city and 18 highway. MPG in the winter is crap regardless. I have a cai and cat back exhaust and the same tire set up as you and really havent noticed much in the way of gains in mpg. And for the money to go up to 93 the small mpg increase u may get isnt goin to save you any money lol. The fact is the ram hemi was designed for power not mileage. I plan on adding a tuner soon but im doubtful about any better mileage. Welcome to the forumz tho man there's alot of very knowledgeable helpful people here.

Nice truck! Personally I would have tried to find an 09+, even if I had to give up some features. I cant stand the cheapo interiors on the 08's and down. BUT...the outsides look great. I always told myself when Dodge changed their interiors I would switch from Ford, and sure enough I did! Hope you enjoy your truck man, its a looker for sure!
