Default 6 month 8K mi 1500 Laramie 4x4 Review

It's been since October and 8K miles that I've owned this truck and I wanted to share my thoughts both good and bad:
Good:
1) Looks. I get unsolicited compliments from people not even into trucks about how this rig looks. And I often sit in restaurants facing where I know I can see it, just to be able to look at it more.
2) Power. Once the Hemi gets going, it just does not want to stop.
3) Ride. Rides better than most vehicles I've ridden in. Including BMW's, Lexus and Infinities. (Granted, they are tuned for handling so they are stiff, but I think the point is still valid considering their luxury labels).
4) Amenities. This thing is loaded with goodies. Heated and cooled seats are the best thing since 4wd.
5) MPG. Okay, so 14 average MPG seems low, but this has more torque and HP than my Titan did (both had/have 35" tires) and averages 1 MPG better. So in my book, that's impressive.
6) Towing. Tows our Jet Ski's very easily (2,900 pound trailer, toolbox and skiis) and the manual-shift auto tranny helps a lot with braking.
7) Relatively easy oil changes.
Bad:
1) Transmission. Not a true 5 speed as 2nd and 3rd are only 250 rpm apart. Also, the stall (drop in rpm, or large hesitation-whatever you want to call it) after first-to-second shifts is waaaay too big. The only way to avoid the stall is to mash it every time. The tranny also shifts out of 5th easily up hills. I'd like to see it hold the gear longer and power through it.
2) Power. (Yes, it's listed in both categories) Power down low is just luke warm. Rev her up and it goes like a bat out of hell, but I like down-low 4x4 torque and I would have rather seen this curve more for towing and such, rather than freeway on-ramps.
3) Hard Plastic visors: Seriously? Leather heated and cooled seats, and the visors seem like they were spec'd from a stripped Utility van. Wait, the utility van would have had vinyl visors so they would have been actually softer.
4) Small Rear slide window. I notice that only the large import trucks make a decent sized sliding rear (Toyota and Nissan). Seems very 2003 to me.
5) Outside mirrors. Lack of integrated convex mirrors and lack of power folding at this (the highest) trim level.
6) Badging. This is a very personal thing I know, but I really do not like all the badging and especially that RAM head sunk into my tailgate (meaning I can't easily remove it without body work). And speaking of tailgate, why do they not include an assist spring with the tailgate? My 2007 Titan did. Just pop the Handel and watch it slowly lower. Nice. But on this truck I had to buy an assist device, or watch it drop like a rock every time.

Jerry Springer final thoughts: Would I buy one again? Yup. In a heartbeat. No truck will be perfect for everyone and this one comes close for me. Great balance of power/looks and capability.

Great write up! I think a lot of people have the same little gripes, but it is such nice truck! It shines in all the other areas!

Thanks 916T, it took me 30 minutes to write that. You could have at least pretended it took longer to read! lol. But I agree, they are great trucks.

I agree on the transmission, the 1-2 gap is very large. Will be fixed with the new transmissions. Should also help with the lack of torque (or appearance of) at lower RPMs. I'd also like power folding mirrors as well. All the other manufacturers offer this as an option.

That comment about the sun visor cracked me up! The second day I had the truck I pulled it down for use and went "what the **** is this?". It doesn't even cover the windshield. I pretty sure it came from a Caliber. Oh well!

Awesome write up man! I'm sure this will help some people who still don't know if they want a Ram yet.

Awesome write up considering I have exactly the same truck!

Just out of curiosity, where did you buy your tailgate assist thingy?

Reps!

The one I purchased was a DeeZee EZ Down tailgate dampener. Picked it up at Van & Truck World, Mississauga. Best $$$ I spent on the truck so far.

Personaly, I like how my truck will wind up and hold a 1st and 2nd gear under decent throttle pressure. There is nothing that bothers me more than a short shifting auto trans. I like to be able to start from a standstill, turn a corner, and accellerate and not be in 3rd gear. What I would really like to see is a 6spd. manual! Maybe behind the new 392 hemi! I agree on the sunvisors, kinda cheap,

I think I got mine (Dee-Zee) on Amazon. I agree with xopt, that it's a very worthwhile investment.

Have you tried a tuner to see if it helps with the 1-2 gear lag? That would be nice, considering I'm (many of us are) going to be living with this truck for many years.
