Default ecm question

can anybody tell a sure way to make sure my computer in my truck is okay with out taking to a shop. it skips and misses very badly while its warming up them sometimes has a slight miss while its warmed up. i have no codes and when i put a scanner on it says pass. i have done all the basic stuff, the intake and plenmum gaskets cause they were leaking, replaced a few sensors i thought might be bad. tuned it up to. the only things that seem wrong when i pulled the plugs they were gapped at .80 not .40 and it never trips at trouble code no matter how bad it misses. ijust got this truck. i had a 04 ram and still have a 01 caravan so everything i am used to working on somthing that has coil packs. its been so long since i had a distrubor and can't remember if the ignition timing is controlled by the ecm or a seperate module. i have looked and can't find any bad grounds. does anybody know how many ohms and what prongs on the coil to check in case its bad.

did you do plug wires too? doesn't really say except "basic stuff" & "tuned it up" so i have to guess you may have....... as far as the ecm goin bad, well... since you say you have scanned it, did the ecm ever quit talking to the scanner... like "lost communication"? if so, the ECM is 9 out of 10 times dying. the last 1 out of 10 could be almost anything, like grounds. it's rare, but i've seen ignition switches, sensors, neutral safety switches, burnt wires cause "supposed" bad ecms. all those issues were on all kinds of vehicles, not just dodges.

good luck troubleshooting

I would change out the distributor cap and wires, then see how it's doing. If you've already done this, then I'll let the guys with more experience help ya out.

when i tuned it up i did everything. when i did the intake i cleaned every ground i could find. is there any that might be hard to find that you know of sdram03.it says it talks to ecm but i figure out why it shows no codes. when it warms up it misses and lopes like it has race cam in it. it should at least pull a rich condition code i would think.the harness to engine looks good no bare spots or pinches. do you know the ohms and which pins on the coil to check? i have know clue why the plugs were gaped so big they were not worn someone did it. you think my coil might be bad from pushing that big of a gap?

ah HA!! when it warms up. so no issues at all when you first start it up? if that is the case. then it can be narrowed down considerably. when it warms up and goes into "closed-loop", the ecm is now talking to every sensor possible. which includes the O2. the o2 is pretty much ignored til then cause it's gonna show rich conditions (when it should be rich since the engine is cold and you need more fuel to even run) and the computer waits (so to speak). during closed-loop, the ecm is trying it's darndest to make the AFR perfect to meet the specs factory has done for it. i bet if runs bad then, the o2 is probably toast. to check it, use the scanner and watch the voltage (.1-.9v roughly). some scanners just show "rich" or "lean". in that case, if it says one or the other for more than a few seconds, then you got problems. i prefer to see what the voltage is actually doing at the ecm. if you know which pin, probe with voltmeter and see what happens. if the value is jumping up n down between .1-.9, then it's more than likely doing it's job (which sux cause that means something else is bad). if the voltage goes to 0 or goes way high like +4-5 volts, then o2 or wiring is toast. also, if it's steady, even between .1-.9, then it's bad cause it's not responding. there is no way the computer puts a perfectly stable AFR cause the environment is always changing and the computer is constantly adjusting.

sorry for thelong, rambling post. just got up with the lil one and em quite tired. hopefully this helps.

oh, the grounds, don't know if dodge did it in 1998, but there "might" be a ground hooked on 1 of the bolts that holds the tranny to the engine. slim, but also doubt it would be bad, unless it got pinched when a tranny was swapped out (if that was ever done). if anything, i would look inside the wiring harness near the firewall where everything comes together. it may look good on the outside, but there could be a wire buried that is burnt or corroded. but i would hold off on that unless you are feeling REALLY froggy. PITA to tear into and then looks like a$$ afterwards. but that's just me.
