Default Busted driveshaft

OK, I'm new to 4x4's so this might be a dumb question but here goes. The other day driving home from work my driveshaft broke, so I calmly slid under the truck, disconected the shaft, threw it in the back, (this wasn't a hangnail or anything major to freak out about, right ) shifted into 4h and drove home. My question is how much driving can I do with the truck pretending to be a front wheel drive vehicle. It's a 1990 Ramcharger with a 360. I do construction so the money is pretty tight right now.

I theory, I would think as much as you need to until you can replace the rear shaft.

I was kinda thinking the same way, its mostly local driving, just thought it better to ask.
Thanks
