Default Trailer towing

So here's the deal. I have towed trailers all my life but always with a manual transmition. My current truck is an automatic. Next month I will be travelling from Ontario to Alberta and back again (7000km). I'll be towing an 18' enclosed trailer empty going out and loaded coming back. Do I need to leave the truck in tow/haul mode all the way when on the highway?

I tow a 29.5 foot travel trailer and I leave mine in tow/haul the entire time.

If you're on flat land at highway speed, you're ok to take it out of tow/haul mode unless you find it's frequently shifting or unlocking the converter.

With an enclosed trailer, yes, keep it in T/H. You are going to have a s**t ton of drag. You can try towing normal but I'm willing to bet it will hunt for gears and you will still kill your mileage. My truck does not like to tow under about 2k rpm's.

I hope the newer tranny's are better than the 2004. My T/H still allows it to go to OD (4th) which causes some hunting of gears on hills and also causes the TC to lock and unlock constantly. Drives me nuts but there is nothing I can do about it unless I want to back down to 50-55 and use 2nd all the time. My Duramax/Allison had me spoiled I guess.

Thanks for the info guys. Other than northern Ontario the rest of the trip should be fairly flat I believe. Going to be spending a bundle on fuel I know.

Tow/Haul will lock out double overdrive and put you in standard OD 4th / ERS "5" as well as chose more aggressive shift points. Dont be afraid to use ERS to lock out higher gears in the hills to allow you to use a lower gear and still roll out of it to less than full throttle when climbing. Also if you press and hold the "-" button when descending it will downshift to the correct gear for optimal compression braking.

I would suggest, using the joy stick, and stay in 4th.
