Default Re gearing??

what exactly is regearing? i hear alot about guys lifting their trucks then regearing to not lose performance and gain gas mileage. im thinking about putting on 35s on my stock 20s i have an 05 ram hemi 4x4, what are the benefits of regearing any disadvantages? also what is the cost ?

I haven't re-geared a Dodge lately so I won't be any help on the costs, plus local labor rates vary quite a bit so I would suggest you talk to some shops and your dealer.

Regearing is replacing your differential gear set(s) to account for the additional rolling resistance, unsprung weight increase and loss of torque you experience with larger wheels and tires.

Here's a good article that explains the basics:

Ya if you go with a set of 35s then you should be alright with stock gears. First you should see which gears you have in the diffs. There is a tag on the front of the axle on the passenger side. You should be able to see it there it will be like a 3.55 or 3.92....I think there is one more gear that is lower then a 3.55, not sure which it is. If you have the 3.55s then you may want to go with a set of 4.10s if you dont like the way the truck feels. If you have the 3.92s then you will be just fine with them and you shouldnt need to regear. I have 3.92s in my truck and I had 35s and the truck drove great.

If you go with a higher gear it helps the acceleration of the truck. Usually drag racers will gear up to launch them off the line much better. It is a great idea if you have BIG tires and you want to be able to drive it haha. The higher gear you go with the more your MPG will take a hit too. It wont be that much of a hit but you will loose a bit of it. You should go up 2 gear sets away from what you have if you regear. What I mean is if you have 3.55s then go with 4.10s instead of 3.92s. That will give you a noticable change rather then wasting money haha
