Default 5w - 20 only?

Greetings.
This is my first Forum question so sorry for any Newbie mistakes.
I am a happy new Ram owner living in Barbados, West Indies.

I can't locate any 5w-20 engine oil down here, closest is 5w-30.

Any major reasons not to use the 30????Not thinking of mixing, more of a complete switch at first oil change.

Thanks in advance

If 5w-30 all you have then use it. The MDS might not operate quite as smoothly but you shouldn't suffer any other ill-effects.

I'm by no means as qualified as RamTech, but you're in a very warm and humid climate too. That should help offset the higher viscosity. Welcome to the forum!

The only reason for the 5 - 20 oil is for better fuel economy. But theres a trade off for the better fuel economy, which is higher ware rate. 1% fuel rate increase for 15% more ware. If you read the owners manual the only RAM 5.7 Hemi that uses the 5 -20 is the 1500. The 2500/3500 are told to use 5 - 30 and its the same engine.

Don't mean to be rude here but the reason for 5w-20 in the 1500 is for MDS transitions to be as smooths as possible. Can you actually cite a particular study that shows the 5w-20 used in the 1500 causes increased wear percentage you quoted? I'd like to see that for myself.

After my last oil change my oil light came on just after a 1000 MLS so I checked my receipt and the dealer had put in 5w30 the MDS worked with the 5w30 in. The dealer took responsibility and changed the oil back to 5w20 as recommended. It would be interesting to see if your oil light comes on say under 2000 MLS?
RAGAMUFFING love the handle.

You have 8000 miles to go before the first oil change, so you have time to order it and have it delivered. Curious as to where you purchased your truck?????

^^wylie makes a good point, if you can, order some 5W-20 from somewhere like Amsoil and keep using the fully synthetic, you'll be happier in the long run.

I have seen this 8000 mls a couple of times, has the oil change gone to 8000 in the owners manual on the 2011 against the 2009-10 that are 6000?
