Default 2WD front end shimmy/shaking problem

I've got a '98 Ram 1500 2WD. When I hit a bump (not all, just the worst ones), it will sometimes start a shaking that feels like it's in the front end. The shaking will go away if I slow a little bit. I thought it was a bad shock so I put all new shocks on. Also replaced the front rotors, wheel bearings and pads while it was jacked up. On the highway after 55 MPH there is a slight shimmy (feels like a tire that's out of round). Most of the time there is no noticable problem.
When I did the shocks and brakes, I put a 2x4 under the tires and shook the tire but noticed no problem with anything that was loose. I did notice that the passenger side tire is worn more on the outside edge than the rest of the tire.
I've searched forums for help. Most front end problems, on the forums, are with 4WD, very little for 2WD.
I'd like to put new tires on it and get it aligned but I'm not sure that this will solve the problems.
I bought this truck new and it's never been damaged. It has 98K miles.
I'm not sure what to check or a better way to check for anything worn. Any suggestions?

If your unsure of how to check out balljoints and steering components let a pro do it for ya . You don't want to install new tires and have it aligned on some bad components .

I found two problems. One was the pitman arm was a little loose on the tie rod end. I just plain missed it when I checked stuff. Replaced it with a Moog pitman arm. That was probably the shaking after a bump. Here was the kicker, though. when I checked the tires, I felt for any 'cupping', typical of a misalignment or worn parts. A friend suggested that maybe there was a broken belt in the tire. we jacked it up and while one of us spun the tire, the other held their hand in one spot just lightly dragging the tire. A great big bump jumped up from the very center of the tread. We figure that it probably is a broken belt.
