Default 4wl boom question lo

I put my 99 dodge 4x4 in 4wl the other day while in some mud and stomped it and heard a extremelly loud boom under me and felt it...any suggestions? Can you hit the gas too hard while in 4wl ?

Not too sure but they say something has to give. If the wheels don't break loose the shafts and differentials break.

Do you still have 4wd ? If not then it could be driveshaft of transfer case, not to hard to tell once you look at the driveshaft.

It might not have "locked up" yet.
I have noticed the 4wd light comes on the dash before the front axle engages.
So it will give me a thump if im too heavy on the gas before lock up.

To engage it takes until all the gears line up and slide into place. When I go into 4WD I give it a gentile hit of the throttle after shifting into 4X4 and you can usually feel it lock in. Don't try to shift it into 4WD while the rear wheels are spinning and the fronts aren't. You can shift on the fly when everything is turning at the same speed, like when I turn onto a snowy road I will coast and shift into 4WD. For 4 wheel low you need to shift the trans into neutral and shift to low range quickly...If you spend to much time with the transfer case in neutral it will grind trying to get into gear (hi or low range) In that case turn off the engine leave the trans in neutral shift the transfer case and fire it up and be on your way
