Default Front mount D-ring shackles for 1500

Hello all,

I have a 2006 ram 1500 and unfortunately it does not have any tow hooks up front. I know I could get ahold of some stock hooks from someone who has a bull bar but I love the idea of having some D-ring shackles on the front just like the winch ready bumpers out there.

I was just wondering if anyone has mounted a shackle onto each tow hook mount? If so, any pointers?

I think this could be done easily by getting your hands on the D rings you want. I have never installed them on Rams but I have on other vehicles (rear bumpers). What you could do is find the D rings you like and either yourself (if you can/have the right tools) or a welder could mount 1/4" steel brackets onto the rings that could then be bolted to the exiting plate and frame of your Ram. I think this would be easy for a welder if they could see your rings and truck (alterantively you could bolt everything together with no welds). Since your Ram is a 2006, you will need to cut-out part of the plastic filler located between the grille and bumber. Your tow brackets, which mount onto the existing plate from the factory, will also need to be to be bolted onto the frame where the bumper brackets are bolted. To do this right, you need to remove the bumper and mount the tow brackets onto the exiting plate and re-mount the bumper brackets and tow brackets to the frame. It is a bit of work but not that technical (do not mount tow hooks/rings with just the bumper brackets - you will leave your bumper behind is you are really going to use your tow hooks).

With the Mopar hooks, which of course are made to fit onto the existing plate and frame, are easy to install, so long as your truck does not have existing mounted accessories, like a grille guard, winch or snow plow frame.

Good Luck.

I'm not allowed to post an actual site for the tow hooks that were built & installed for your year ram, but, look at the google search results, they did pix & all

looks good. I've been wanting to ad some hooks myself. Might have to give this a try.

The end of your frame plate where it mates to the bumper probably already has 4 holes in it. Kinda like this:

With the tow hooks in:

With them out:

One wrench on the front, one on the back and yer good to go.

I'm thinking if these holes are there, all you do is fab up a plate, drill the mounting holes, weld in the D ring and yer good. Alternately, slot the bracket plate and slip the D ring with a plate welded to it through the slot. That way, you run less risk of the weld breaking.

Are those on a 1500, or 2500+? If they were off of yours, the mega cabs have the 2500 frame under them, right? There was mention of the 1500's frame not being stout enough to do the tow hooks without being braced off of each other (thus the continuous bar across for the factory hooks). Thoughts on that?
