Question Seek opinions about transfer case

I recently bought my old Ram, and everything is in pretty good shape mechanicaly, except while driving in 2Hi, there is grinding gear noise near transmission shift points, which then bangs, and is quiet until next shift point-auto transmission.

If I roll in 4Hi, no noise or problems, except dry road issues in 4WD.......

I have adjusted the manual transfercase shifter to several positions, no luck. Before shelling out a grand or so for a transfercase swap/rebuild, I would like to hear from some guys who know.......Thanks!

What driveline components have you checked/inspected so far?

Hi, RamTech. I have inspected the driveline, but have not checked transfercase fluid/fluid level yet. I have adjusted the case shifter several times, but the only time I get some positive results, the adjustment is such that the shifter is almost starting to get into 4Hi.

This rig has seen time in snow, as I am finding salt damage/lost of rust on the frame, exhaust componets, etc. including a little cancer on the lower body. With what I paid for the truck, and saw, no biggie.

Top of my list is muffler, u-joints/driveshafts cleaned up, and rust removal/painting. Driveability is way better than expected, and after 2 1/2 weeks I already put 300 miles on the rig. Smooth, no pulling, no shift shock, etc. I got some $$ off the deal due to the grinding noise, and expect to replace the transfercase if needed. I think it is a NV231/241?? My Haynes calls out Mopar3 ATF, I have some Mopar4-can I use that?

I am also thinking, as we are well out of snow weather now, that I may pull the front driveshaft for now, roll in 4Hi, until I have the $$ for the case. Do they have syncros? It seems to be trying to go into 4Hi at shift points, then clunks back into 2Hi. Staying in 4Hi there is no noise at all. Thanks!!

Goa ahead and do a drain and fill on the case. ATF+4 is backward compatible with the +3. I don't believe anything is syncronized in these cases.
