Question Newb Question about Tire Sizes

Hey guys,
I'm looking to get some middle of the line all-terrain tires for the truck.. basically they're stock (like everything else on the truck) and I just want some to handle the snow a little better for next year. I keep seeing people mention in here tire sizes in the format of '245/75-16'; what exactly does this even mean?

I'm not sure what size the stock tires are; whatever a 2009 1500 SLT came with I suppose. But if someone could explain tire sizing, that would be immensely helpful in figuring out what brand of tires I should be looking for

Thanks guys!

When you see 265/70/17 it is a metric tire. The first number you see, 265, is the width of your tire. The second number 70 is your sidewall, its 70% of the width of the tire. The last number, 17 is your wheel size.
Sometimes you wheel see different letters with the numbers and those usually indicate load ratings, service description or speed ratings.
Sometimes you may see 31x10.5x17 which is in inches instead. Tire height x width x wheel size.
There are several online tire size calculators that will tell you metric tire sizes in this format so you can compare.(ie a 265 is usually around 31", 285 is usually around 33" depending on the sidewall of course)
If you look on the sidewall of your tires you will see a number like this that will tell what you tire size is since I dont kknow what wheel option you have on your truck.
Not always the cheapest but I'm a really big fan of hankook dynapro at

Just wanna piggy back and throw in that the 265 is the width in millimeters.

Here's a link that describes tire sizes and how to decipher them:

A very reasonably priced tire would be a Cooper Neon LTZ. And you can go up to a 285/65 or a 275/70 tire as well. I'd go to a store and get some different sizes test fitted!

Others have explained the sizing, so I'll throw in my 2 cents on the tire. I went with Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on my truck. They are great and have handled everything I've thrown at them.

I got them from American Tire And Auto on Rt 22 east in Green Brook. They are excellent people to deal with and will beat any price, even online prices.

If you want a really good tire that can handle all weather cinditions then look at the BF Goodrich A/T KOs. I have them on my truck and they are very good. If you want them for the winter as well then you should look into a thin tire like a 265 so you'll cut through.
