Default Trade or Keep

So Folks, Im up against a decision here. I have my 2012 ram hemi purchased dec 2012, so it is still under the bumper to bumper. It has 25,000 miles on it. It is a nice truck with very few mods. It is payed off and I am trying to make a decision.

Now it has been rock solid so far and treated me very well, I have very few complaints.

On the one hand I can be happy with what I have and keep it, Task the $300 a month that was the payment to few more mods. However two things that I don't like about the truck that I cannot change by keeping it, The 5spd Tranny and the 3.55 open gearset.

On the other hand, I can trade it for a 2013+ with 8 spd transmission and make couple more years of $300 payments. I made mistake of test driving one the other day and admit it was a nice ride.

Im just unsure of which way I want to go. I would love forum members thoughts on the matter.

Nothing nicer than a paid off truck....

Keep it and do a torque converter upgrade and add a limited slip.

Keep driving the 2012 for another 18 months & check to make sure that you have a Extended Warranty in place
as an example:
3 year Maximum Care Extended Warranty w/ $100 deductible
http://www.moparvehicleprotection.com/
get the online price & have the dealership match it

In the 2017 model year, there will be a major update done to the Rams
Likely available to order about July of 2016

I researched the extended warranty thing a while back and am on the fence as to whether the $1300+ They want for it is worth it.

Hello, What updates in 2017? I can't seem to find a definitive answer in my searching, Only that they may join ford in the aluminum frame thing, And i'm not sure if that is really that big a deal.

Forcepro - Thanks, ill definitely do that if I keep the truck.

The truck that fits 90% of your needs is the Truck for you

I'm sure someone out there would love to have a '12 with 25k even with a hook !

Just my humble opinion

KEEP IT, get the extended warranty and enjoy having a truck that is payment free. If you keep it maintained and fix problems before they become ones that truck will last you a very long time. Mine is over 13 years old and everything works as good, or in cases where I upgraded things, better than when new. Aluminum is a heck of allot more expensive to repair and nowhere near as durable to repeated stresses as steel. (It's a natural property of the element that prevents it from taking stress below it's failure point and remaining unaffected in the long term. This basically means that the forces exerted on it from even unloaded driving will eventually cause the aluminum to fracture and crack)

Keep it, its paid off. There will always be something newer and better coming out and trying to play catch up will only make you spend money unnecessarily. You can add an LSD rear, the trans is the only thing you can't change.

I say trade it! I traded my '12 for the '14 I have now because I liked the 8 speed that much. I actually was able to get the truck I always wanted with all of the option I wanted (every one of them) and mine WASN'T paid for.........

Question is what do you really want?????? Vehicles are bad investments so I say get what you want if you can but that's just my opinion

l had a 2014 with 6 k miles. had 3 21 gears open diff, and was black. hated the color most of all. found a 12 with 3 92 gears and posi rear end, cherry red. bought it with no regrets. will never buy another black truck, or a truck without locking diff. I say get the truck you want!

little off topic but, just out of curiosity, Mind if I ask how you made out in that deal? I have traded up, never traded down.

And why your against black? I have always owned dark blue, never owned a single black vehicle, But I was seriously considering my next one being the blackout package. Think they are real sharp.

I hate the open diff, the 3.55 doesn't bother me to much. It becomes moot if I get an 8 spd. But if I keep it ill go for that auburn unit.

I'm also considering getting the Pennstar for the extra MPG if I upgrade to later model, Since I don't tow anymore. I know its a truck, but, I only get like 12 - 13 mpg on this thing. LOL. I was also considering going for a crew cab over the quad but I am very indecisive at the moment.

I have never considered a vehicle a monetary investment. So money I loose into them doesn't really bother me all that much. But with that said, First time in many years that I have not had a vehicle payment and there is a lot I can do with the extra money.

Thanks for all the comments though, I am leaning towards sitting on it for couple more years, buying a cheap gas friendly car to complement it for longer trips and enjoying the lack of a payment and a nice truck.

I really appreciate all you folks thoughts, Please keep em coming.
