Default Tow/Haul

2011 Ram 1500 5.7 automatic. When Tow/Haul button is engaged I notice that the transmission shifts at a higher RPM, and a number 5 comes on in the dash. This is the same number that shows what gear the truck is in when the manual shift mode is in use. I know that the transmission does not shift to 5th gear with the Tow/Haul button engaged, but why is the dash telling me the truck is always in 5th gear? I haven't towed my trailer yet, but I am wondering if everything is correct. The number 5 is on even if I am stopped.
The owners manual does not address the Tow/Hual feature execpt to show the location of the Tow/Haul button.

That number is the 'highest' gear that your vehicle will shift. The tow/haul disables overdrive and raises the shift points... not sure what else it does, but that is all I can physically tell. I believe 5th gear is still active, but I have only used tow/haul at low speeds and off-highway use.

If you set it manually to "4", for example, you won't shift into 5th gear.

Hope this helps, I'm a new RAM owner so I am still learning.

the truck still goes into 5th gear. the shift points are raised to give more torque i believe. I asked the dealer this same question. Because before i bought the truck we had to hook it up to my boat so i could make sure it pulled it smoothly. Mine also readys 5 at all times when in tow haul mode. You can shift to 4 and it will not go past 4th gear.

I had a 2001 or 2002 ford f150 and a tahoe i used to pull the boat prior to this. But we started traveling from south GA to lake norris in Tenn well we had to go up and down the mountain ands the f150 and tahoe would struggle up and down the mountains. So i actually pulled up to the dealership with the boat attached to my f150. So on the test drive we hooked it up to the ram and off we went. I figured the only reason i am buying this is to pull the boat so i mise well test it out from the start. I wanted to see would the 1500 pull it ok or did i need to move up to the 2500..The boat makes the truck look tiny. But that hemi does the job! you could tell the difference as soon as i pushed on the gas. It handles better has more torgue off the line and didn't struggle like the ford did.. Me and my father share 2 boats. 1 is for adult time and other little speed boat we use to pull the kids. Well we went and looked together he was so impressed we both ended up buying a ram that day.. I got the orange he got the other..

I thought both our trucks had the 3.55 gear ratio... I just requested a build sheet from dodge.com and i was wrong both trucks have
DMH 3.92 Rear Axle Ratio
DRBS Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle

that personally means nothing to me. I asked on 1 of the other forums what the ratios mean and someone kind of explained it to me. All i took from it was the higher your number the better for towing... If i have that correct. Anyway i love them and they do a great job of towing my toys. The big boat with gear and gas weighs in between 7,500 -8,000 pounds and no problems. But when we take both boats i try to pull the little one let me dad pull the heavier one and pay for more gas LOL...

Also i would like to think they gave us a good deal since we bought 2. We paid 27K and some change each..

If your pulling 7500-8000 with that 1500 I think I would be a little more concerned with stopping instead of with the pulling power of that truck-----IMHO

10,450-pound maximum towing capacity for the regular cab, long-bed, two-wheel-drive model with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. It also requires a 3.92 rear axle.. Which is what i have.
http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2009/07...50-pounds.html

i have always gone by as long as you don't tow over 80% of the vehicles maximum towing compacity that should leave plenty ability to stop or for quick manovers. Keeps you in control of what your towing...
