Reviving an old post here!

I have the same issue with mine. I took it to my local body shop who is going to fix the rust I have for 550.00. Thats cutting out the old rust and welding in a new panel, then painting and everything.

He told me that the way the bed is designed is the exterior panel thats visible to you and the internal panel is in the shape of a V. Water gets in there and rusts it out. An easy way to prevent this, either after its fixed or before it gets too bad, is to drill a few small holes along the inside panel in the wheel well as close to the bottom as possible, then spray some rust inhibitor inside pretty liberally, then seal the holes. This is the easy fix.

When drilling you dont have a lot of space between the interior and exterior panels so be very careful and take your time so you dont drill right through the whole truck.

I have head from a few people that if the rust is perforating the metal that dodge MIGHT cover it, so we just wait until its bad enough that the metal has holes through it, then bring it in?

I hope Dodge has fixed the water trap issue and the new body style doesn't rust out in 4+ years!

Is it just the bedside outer skin that needs replacing or does whole bed rust bad on these trucks? I notice I have some slight rust building up and was looking at my LMC truck mag on prices on pieces, and didn't know if its a whole bed bed I need or just outer skin.

I just cut my wheel well today, and holy piss there was a lot of rust in there! I haven't bought the patch panel yet, but I wanted to stop the rust before it got too big for a patch panel to cover. I blew a hole straight through the bed when I was washing it the other day. As far as I know the problem is only over the wheel well where the wheel tub is welded to it. There is nowhere for water and dirt to go. The wheel tub is rusted on the back (where you can't see until you cut). I think ill cut most of it out since I can't find a repair panel for that part, make a brace for the wheel well and then get the plastic mopar inner wheel wells to keep crud out. Then there won't be anywhere for water and dirt to get trapped and I can keep an eye on the back I my new panel.

Going to auto body shop tomorrow to get estimates, what should I ask them to do about what's making these trucks rust in that area?

I'm trying find a place locally that does the rust spray, so far only found one 2 hours away.

Either drill holes in the inner fender or separate it and put a plastic inner fender in the rear

I have no rust yet, so I should take the plastic linear in the wheel right now to check out inner damage?

I have the same problem, mines a 2005, I have a bubble on the passenger side wheel well, and also my tailgate. The tailgate bubble came off when I went through the car wash. It is still metal with a little rust around the paint edges. I am heading to the body shop tomorrow. Will post when i get my estimate.

So just got back from auto body shop. He said it isnt rust on my truck, not yet, we peeled the paint and everything was ok, but would eventually cause rust. Fix and repaint passenger side bed, and fix all dings on my tailgate. $700.
