Question First Tow with Ram Kinda Impressed

Well I set out on my first tow this morning with my ram and enclosed econohauler and I was very impressed with the way that it handled the 2200 pound load on the highway. I kept her in tow/haul and it ran about 1800rpm and ran up to 2800rpm on slight slopes. However, on the one large hill that I had to climb (about 25 degree slope) I was not impressed with the truck at all. It jumped to 4700rpms and continued there all the way up the hill (about 2 kilometers). I was traveling at about 108 km/h (67 m/h) the problem was when I went to let off the gas slightly it held at 4700rpms and wouldn't drop down. It finally dropped when I released the accelerator completely but as soon as I tapped the gas it jumped right back up to it again. Is this normal for a hemi in tow/haul mode to shift hard and act like that under acceleration?

Thanks

Brandon

P.S Sorry for crappy blackberry photos

Mine does the same thing with my travel trailer which is around 4000 lbs. On a steep grade she will hold one gear and rev around the 4k mark. I only really noticed it once pulling out of a steep river valley running at 105 kph. Once on the divided highway pushing 110 to 115 she didn't do it. Could be a speed related thing?

Alright I hope it is speed related because my old silverado 4.8 liter pulled at that rpm up the same hill but then again its all in the torque curve. Does yours also have more of a harsh shift in tow/haul?

Mine does have a crisp shift in tow/haul mode, wouldn't really call it harsh though. I'll really have to pay attention to what the truck is doing next time I haul the trailer.

I pull a 1800 lb snowmobile trailer around in the winter, and it all depends on conditions! I notice that the amount of power needed from 70+ is much higher than 60-70.

Don't worry about the engine spinning up! It will help move more coolant!

Shouldn't be a problem. Newer engines are made to rev, that's the only way to get 390 horsepower from 345 cubic inches. Don't let it worry you!

At first I towed my 4000 lbs travel trailer in tow/haul but then decided to tow it witout it. I find the engine doesn't downshift for anything and I'm getting better fuel millage. The engine doens't seem to need the extra power to keep my speed and I monitor the coolant and transmission temperature.

Higher revs will cool down the engine. Lots of people don't even use overdrive when towing.

Alright since my last tow, I have towed the same trailer and another trailer a 6500 pounds and both hit 4300 rpms on the same hill. Other that the hill I'll run at 1.8-2 RMP doing about 120-130 km/h without tow haul and 2-2.3 RPM in Tow haul. So Im not too worried about it, its just the hill that gets me. Thanks

Brandon

It is normal for a gas engine to downshift to try to get close to the 390 horses we have.

I'dd be curious to see a dyno chart of our engine but I'm pretty shure at 1800-2000 rpm the engine doesn't even produce 200 hp.

However, I'd love to be able to lock the engine in fifth gear while climing a hill. I'm pretty shure I'dd be able to keep my speed if I was able to be at WOT @ 1800 rpm..
