Default Thinking about EMS

So I'm in college right now in Texas. But I'm thinking that after i finish my 4-5 Yr Degree i might come back home and go to EMS school and get licensed. Any advice or opinions from those who have already done it?
Im going to school for Wildlife Management. So I know it sounds totally opposite but I figured working in parks and other areas it would still look good and be an added skill to the job.

Well in Illinois EMT-B is fairly common. You know doing all the life saving stuff without pushing Meds. It's about 3 months and most of my Firefighter buddies knocked it out in a summer without much effort.

EMT-P in Illinois is a 9 month process and much more complex. You become a full fledged paramedic, but it also does include a certain number of calls, clinical hours, and you have to see a certain number of procedures during your clinical's such as 3 deliveries. The course in itself is about $3,500 more or less depending on program you take.

I am thinking about EMT-B as a summer thing next year to help me stand out more as a teacher. Kids do crazy things when your not looking.

I think if your planning on it being a big portion of your life I would go for the Paramedic.

EMT-B in Kentucky takes 6 semester hours (one class meeting 8 hours/wk). We have no EMT-Intermediate in KY and Paramedic is a 2 year course with a lot of ambulance/hospital time. I'm sure this is about the same in every state.
EMT-B isn't a difficult course if you will apply yourself and it's very valuable info even if you never work for a ambulance service or FD...Good Luck!

Its a great Addition to your bag of tricks! Looks good to an employer. And you said wildlife management? i'd imagine there is alot of time in the woods/forests? What if your co-worker gets hurt, At least you will be more knowledgeable than someone with just basic first aid. It's not hard (at least in pa) so go for it!!!

Tlauden is right, it's not real hard, just remember, air goes in and out, blood goes round and round, any deviation from this is a problem!

Don't do it to "look good." If you are into it, then do it. I see too many people who aren't cut out for the job who are better off just watching. Do some ride-alongs or volunteer to see if you like it. People who do this for a career take the job seriously, not saying you won't, but be prepared to prove yourself.

I am not in any part of the medical field

I do know about gov't jobs though, like if you went with something like Parks & Recreation, Forestry, or anything like that, the more Badges or Certifications that you hold when applying for a position , the more you are worth.

You can make yourself the go to person

The same for a person that is working for any company, if you go to the Human Resources Office & let them know that you want to make yourself a better asset to the company & to further your knowledge about the job that you already have. They will tell you to taking classes about this or that & 8 times out of 10, they will help you pay for those classes
